Tennessee and New England battled through extreme cold Saturday night in Foxboro, MA in an AFC Divisional Playoffs matchup. The Patriots outlasted the Titans as a final Steve McNair desperation pass on fourth down late in the fourth quarter fell incomplete giving New England a 17-14 win.
New England's first score of the game came on a Tom Brady pass to wide receiver Bethel Johnson for a 41 yard touchdown on the Patriots' first possession of the game.
Tennessee answered with a score on their next possession. A six play, 61 yard drive capped by a five yard Chris Brown run into the endzone tied the game at 7-7 with 7:31 left in the first quarter.
With 4:04 left in the first quarter, New England place kicker Adam Vinatieri missed a 44 yard field goal attempt wide left as a Patriots drive stalled in Titans territory.
On the first play of Tennessee's next drive, New England strong safety Rodney Harrison intercepted a pass from Titans quarterback Steve McNair.
The turnover started an 11 play, 57 yard drive with the final yard coming on an Antowain Smith run into the endzone as New England reclaimed a seven point lead with 13:46 left in the second quarter.
Late in the first half, Titans place kicker Gary Anderson attempted a 31 yard field goal, but the kick was blocked by New England's Richard Seymour and recovered by the Patriots.
New England took a 14-7 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
Late in the third quarter, Tennessee orchestrated an 11 play, 70 yard scoring drive highlighted by a 14 yard touchdown pass from McNair to wide receiver Derrick Mason.
The score tied the game at 14-14 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
On the score, Mason dove into the endzone and was flipped while landing awkwardly. The Titans leading receiver left the field with a bruised right knee but did return to the game.
On the ensuing Patriot's drive, tight end Daniel Graham caught a Tom Brady pass but fumbled on the play due to a hit from Titans Kevin Carter. The ball was recovered by Tennessee's Carlos Hall on their own 47 yard line.
Tennessee failed to turn the fumble recovery into a scoring opportunity.
With 4:11 left in the fourth quarter, New England's Adam Vinatieri finally broke the tie with a 46 yard field goal.
The kick gave the Patriots a 17-14 lead late in the fourth quarter.
On Tennessee's final drive, wide receiver Drew Bennett made two acrobatic catches to keep the Titans drive and season alive, but a final desperation throw from McNair fell in and out of the hands of Bennett and gave New England the ball and the win.
The Titans tallied 284 total yards in the game with 200 yards coming in the air and 84 yards on the ground. The Patriots totaled 297 yards on 201 passing yards and 96 rushing yards.
McNair completed 18 of 26 passes for 210 yards including a touchdown, but also threw an interception and was flagged for an intentional grounding play on the final drive which took the Titans out of field goal range.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady completed 21 of 41 passes for 201 yards and one touchdown.
Titans runningback Eddie George was held to only 48 yards on 16 rushes while Patriots runningback Antowain Smith rushed for 69 yards on the same amount of attempts.
Tennessee wide receiver Derrick Mason led the Titans in receiving with seven catches for 90 yards and a touchdown catch while New England's Bethel Johnson caught two passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Tennessee's season comes to a completion with a final record of 13-5 while New England wins their 13th straight game and advances to the AFC Championship Game.
