A close battle in Houston saw the Titans take a 27-24 victory on a Drew Bennett 23 yard touchdown catch on fourth and ten with 24 seconds left in the game as Tennessee trailed by four points.
The score gave the Titans a three point 27-24 lead with 17 seconds left. The ensuing Houston possession ended when cornerback Samari Rolle grabbed his second interception of the day.
Trailing by three, Houston drove 80 yards on four plays highlighted by a Domanick Davis six yard touchdown run to give the Texans their first lead of the second half.
Titans place kicker Gary Anderson hit a 26 yard field goal, his second of the day, to give Tennessee the three point lead.
Texans quarterback David Carr put together a six play, 72 yard scoring drive capped by a 20 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Corey Bradford to tie the game at 17-17 with 3:22 left in the third quarter.
Titans cornerback Samari Rolle gave Tennessee a 17-10 lead as Houston's Domanick Davis fumbled the ball with 5:18 left in the third quarter. Rolle recovered the ball and scrambled 62 yards for a touchdown giving the Titans a one touchdown lead.
Rolle finished with two interceptions and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the game.
With 8:44 left in the third quarter, Titans quarterback Steve McNair threw an interception to Houston's Marlon McCree. McCree took the pick 95 yards for a Texans touchdown tieing the score at 10-10.
After a sluggish first quarter, Tennessee and Houston faced off for a wild second quarter with the Titans coming out with a 10-3 halftime lead.
To begin the second quarter, Texans place kicker Kris Brown split the uprights on a 49 yard field goal for the first score of the game and a Texans 3-0 lead.
With 3:16 left in the half, Tennessee finally got on the board as the Titans began a drive on their own seven yard line. Quarterback Steve McNair, who started despite multiple injuries, connected with Derrick Mason for 19 yards, Justin McCareins for 73 yards, and Erron Kinney on a two yard touchdown pass giving Tennessee a 7-3 lead.
With less than two minutes to play, the Titans obtained possession on their own 18 yard line.
On second down and ten yards to go, McNair fumbled on the play with the Texans recovering the ball. A review of the play gave Tennessee the ball back under the controversial tuck rule.
Still 66 yards from the endzone with 32 seconds to go, the Titans drove down the field on a Robert Holcombe 16 yard run and a Chris Brown 28 yard run.
With 12 seconds left in the half, Tennessee jumped offside after hurrying to spike the ball. The penalty, however, was called on Houston as defensive lineman Junior Ioane drew the Titans offside with false snap calls.
The penalty set up a 41 yard field goal from Tennessee's Gary Anderson as time expired giving the Titans a 10-3 lead at halftime.
Titans cornerback Andre Dyson left the game midway through the first half with a rib injury. Dyson was taken to the lockerroom for x-rays and did not return to action in the first half. X-rays results came back negative and Dyson returned to action midway through the fourth quarter.
Tennessee finished with 450 total yards including 268 in the air and 182 yards on the ground.
Houston countered with 326 total yards: 235 yards passing and 91 yards rushing.
Titans quarterback Steve McNair, who started the game despite suffering from a sprained ankle, strained calf, and cracked bone spur, completed 17 of 36 passes for 268 yards including two touchdowns.
Tennessee runningback Eddie George ran for 79 yards on 19 carries while backup Chris Brown followed with 69 yards on 10 carries.
Cornerback Samari Rolle finished a career day with two interceptions and a fumble recovery returned 62 yards for a touchdown.
The Tennessee win clinches a Titans playoff spot for the fourth time in five years and gives Tennessee an overall record of 11-4 while Houston falls to 5-10 on the season.
