Columbia Central High Senior Wins Titans Scholar Award

Titans Radio and Edamerica will honor Columbia Central High senior John Fischer with the Edamerica Scholar Athlete Award Sunday when the Titans take on the Lions.

This weekly award is designed to award the stars and leaders of the future. It is awarded to an outstanding male or female high school student in the mid south region. The recipient must exemplify leadership in the classroom, in their community and on the field.

A panel consisting of Titans Radio partners from across the mid south selected Fischer for his accomplishments in cross country and track, as well as his outstanding academic achievements.

''John has excelled in the classroom, the community and as an athlete,'' coach Len Jeffers said.

For four years, Fischer made the Mid-State Cross Country Association All Midstate Team. He also qualified for the TSSAA AAA State Championships all four years. Fischer, who holds a school record in cross country, was a member of the USA Cross Country Team for World Sports Exchange in Sydney, Australia in 2002.

Fischer is also active in track. He holds three school records and earned All-State after placing third in the 1600 Meters Championships this spring. He also qualified for the Great Eight Invitational at Vanderbilt in 2003 and 2004. Fischer also belongs to his school's swim team.

Fischer is very active in his school. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Key Club, he was named to Who's Who in Sports and Who's Who Among American High School Students. Fischer is also a member of the Sons of the Legion. He is a charter member of the President Polk Society for Children of the American Revolution.

Fischer also belongs to Columbia Central's NJROTC program. He is a Color Guard Commander, Drill Team Commander and Physical Fitness Commander. Fischer received the 2004 National Purple Heart Award.

Fischer will be honored this Sunday during Titans Radio's Halftime Report with Mike Keith, Pat Ryan and Larry Stone as they present live coverage of the Titans and Lions. Coverage begins at 11 am central on 1280AM WMCP, the Titans Radio partner in Columbia. Fischer will also be featured on the Titans Radio website, www.titansradio.com

Fischer will receive a plaque for the award and will also be eligible for a $1000 scholarship to be awarded at the end of the season.

This is the fifth season Titans Radio has recognized outstanding high school students during each game.
