Titans Lose Another Shootout, 40-35
By Randall Thomason December 19, 2004

It seemed to be a winnable game against another 4-9 team that has had its fair share of struggles this season, but in the end another valiant effort from the Titans wasn't enough to win as Oakland claimed a 40-35 victory.

Resorting almost entirely to the passing game without the services of running back Chris Brown, Tennessee's offense put together another outstanding game, headlined by what is rapidly becoming one of the league's most dangerous quarterback-receiver combinations.

Titans receiver Drew Bennett continued his stellar play with two more touchdown catches from quarterback Billy Volek while recording 13 overall catches for 160 yards.

''We got Drew isolated on the guys we wanted,'' Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said. ''When (the Raiders) tried to help them Billy did a nice job getting the ball to other people.''

Volek topped 400 yards passing for the second straight week, completing 40 of 60 passes for 492 yards and four touchdowns.

''(Volek) has done a nice job,'' Heimerdinger said following the game. ''This is two games in a row where eight guys have caught passes, and we've done a nice job running after the catch.''

The Titans defense struggled to contain Oakland's passing attack all day, as Raiders quarterback Kerry Collins threw for 371 yards and five touchdown passes.

''I think the biggest things were the third downs in that game,'' Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. ''Number one we let them convert 50 percent but that's even misleading because we had two penalties on key stops that kept those drives alive for touchdowns.''

Oakland got it going early when Collins connected with wide receiver Teyo Johnson with 9:12 remaining in the first quarter.

Collins also hit wideout Jerry Porter in the first quarter with a 32-yard scoring strike against a depleted Titans secondary.

Bennett made his first touchdown grab with 3:08 to play in the first quarter on a 17-yard pass from Volek.

Bennett recorded a highlight reel touchdown in the second quarter to tie the score at 14-14 when he laid out for a 23-yard catch in the end zone amidst tight coverage.

The two teams traded late scores in the first half. Collins tossed another touchdown to Porter, this one covering 18 yards.

The Titans responded quickly, marching 76 yards in just four plays before rookie tight end Ben Troupe caught his first touchdown pass from seven yards out to deadlock the game 21-21 at halftime.

Oakland put the Titans in a hole out of the locker room, registering 14 unanswered points in the third quarter. Collins threw a 45-yard scoring pass to Doug Gabriel and later connected with Porter for the receiver's third score of the day.

Tennessee fought back, driving 66 yards at the start of the fourth quarter to draw within one score. On a fourth-and-goal play from the three yard line, Volek hit Derrick Mason on a quick out in the front right corner of the end zone to slash the Raiders lead to 35-28.

A 42-yard field goal from Oakland kicker Sebastian Janikowski with 3:39 remaining backed the Titans against a wall, making the lead 38-28.

Volek rallied the team for another scoring drive to keep hope alive, scoring on a one-yard quarterback sneak to put the game within reach at 38-35.

Oakland secured possession on an onside kick attempt and proceeded to milk the clock down to under 30 seconds before punting the ball back to Tennessee.

In desperate need of a big play, Volek let fly with a pass as he was going down under a heavy rush in his own end zone. Volek was flagged for intentional grounding, resulting in an Oakland safety because the penalty occurred in the end zone.

The two teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense with over 800 of those yards coming via the passing game.
