Mary Cunningham is the winner of the fifth annual Tennessee Titans Community Quarterback Award in recognition of her 30 years of dedicated volunteer service to Kingsport’s Meals on Wheels program.
The 78-year-old Cunningham was selected from more than 100 quality nominees who give countless hours of volunteer service to charitable organizations throughout Tennessee.
The Voice of the Titans Mike Keith and Titans Vice President for Community Relations Bob Hyde made the presentation of the award Thursday in Kingsport.
''I am truly honored by this award,'' Cunningham said. ''We couldn't do our work without volunteers.''
In honor of Cunningham’s selection as the statewide winner, Titans Owner / President K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. will make a $10,000 donation from the Titans Foundation to Meals on Wheels of Kingsport to go along with an additional $1,000 awarded for her initial selection as one of 10 finalists for total grant of $11,000 to Meals on Wheels for her efforts.
Nine additional organizations will also receive a $1,000 grant from the Titans Foundation in recognition of the other nine finalists. This year’s grants bring the total amount donated from the Titans Foundation to Tennessee charities to more than $110,000 to Community Quarterback Award honorees since the program began in 2000.
Tim McClain, a Meals on Wheels board member, stated on Cunningham’s nomination form that ''Mary has volunteered with Meals on Wheels (MOW) for over 30 years, assisting in nearly every possible capacity. Mary helps prepare and deliver meals, she processes recipient applications (including making home visits), she recruits and trains new volunteers, and she has served as a member and past president of the MOW Board of Directors. In her contact with each recipient, Mary often helps the recipients contact other local support agencies such as Shepherd Center. Each of the 225 meal recipients knows Mary Cunningham by name! Mary deserves much of the credit for helping keep MOW organized and running smoothly. In her 30 years of volunteer work with MOW, Mary has had a hand in providing over 1 million meals and on average, Mary spends 40 hours each week doing something for MOW!''
Cunningham will now compete with the winners from the other 31 NFL clubs as the NFL’s Community Quarterback Award winner, an honor that will earn an additional $25,000 for the organization where the NFL’s winner volunteers.
In the five-year history of this program, the 32 teams and the NFL office has donated more than $3.8 million to charities nationwide honoring Community Quarterback Award winners.
