Titans Radio and Edamerica will honor South-Doyle High sophmore Jared Brentz with the Edamerica Scholar Athlete Award Monday when the Titans take on the Chiefs.
This weekly award is designed to award the stars and leaders of the future. It is awarded to an outstanding male or female high school student in the mid south region. The recipient must exemplify leadership in the classroom, in their community and on the field.
A panel consisting of Titans Radio partners from across the mid south selected Brentz for his accomplishments in golf and wrestling, as well as his outstanding academic achievements.
''Jared Brentz is an inspiration,'' counselor Anne Jacks said.
Brentz, a double amputee, was born with club feet. After two surgeries to correct his legs, he actively participated in baseball and football. Three years ago, Brentz decided to amputate both legs after doctors determined surgery was no longer an option.
Brentz played in his first golf tournament a month after he received new legs. His golf team won their district tournament that year.
Brentz is a member of both the golf and wrestling teams at South-Doyle High. He won his first wrestling tournament this year. He plans to start running with the track coach. Brentz also plans to get involved with football and baseball again. The ambitious sophomore faces adversity and enjoys inspiring others.
''He inspires the people around him,'' coach Robbie Howard said.
Brentz will be honored this Monday during Titans Radio's Halftime Report with Mike Keith, Pat Ryan and Larry Stone as they present live coverage of the Titans and Chiefs. Coverage begins at 7pm central on 100.3 FM WOKI, the Titans Radio partner in Knoxville. Brentz will also be featured on the Titans Radio website, www.titansradio.com
Brentz will receive a plaque for the award and will also be eligible for a $1000 scholarship to be awarded at the end of the season.
This is the fifth season Titans Radio has recognized outstanding high school students during each game.
