Tennessee Head Coach Jeff Fisher said he still expects to win every game and does not get satisfaction from his team just playing hard.
The comments come on the heels of a 51-24 loss to Indianapolis, in which the Titans kicked three onside kicks and scored 24 points in the opening quarter of the game. Even though Tennessee fought hard under difficult circumstances due to injuries, Fisher said he still can't say he was pleased.
''We did some unusual things, things you aren't used to seeing,'' Fisher said. ''My feeling is that is was a valiant effort, it was an exciting ballgame, and things like that, but we didn't win this ballgame. We lost.''
Fisher said that the bottom line to every game his team plays is to win. He did not want to offer up any excuses for the loss, even though Tennessee was out-manned Sunday.
''We're being evaluated on our ability to win football games, and that's the bottom line,'' Fisher said.
With all of the different things Tennessee has used in their gameplan the last few weeks to make up all of their missing players, Fisher said it might give them a slight advantage when opponents have to prepare for his team.
''I can imagine what it's like to practice, to prepare for the the different things we're doing,'' Fisher said. ''I'm hopeful that somebody doesn't pick up on them, because it's a headache.''
Most of the unorthodox style of football has been to take a load off of the defense, which has taken the brunt of the injuries. Though most people pointed to a hard effort by the defense against Indianapolis, Fisher said the 51 points allowed was unacceptable.
Tennessee's defense was having to rely heavily on reserves and rookies against the NFL's best passing attack. Fisher said that 73 percent of the defensive snaps were taken by back back-ups, and rookies took 41 percent of the snaps, but said he expects the same results from everyone.
''That doesn't make a difference to me,'' Fisher said. ''We've got guys out there that need to make plays. We're evaluating them on a daily basis and a weekly basis, whether they've played ten years or they've played one, to go out there and get the job done. And that's what we're going to continue to do.''
As Tennessee prepares for a Monday Night Football match-up with another good offense, Fisher said he'll just keep doing what he can to give his team its best chance of winning.
''We did some things in this ballgame to give us a chance,'' Fisher said. ''We had a plan going in, 'What gave us the best chance to win this game?' And that's what it was. It wasn't to serve the purpose of entertainment. It was to serve the purpose of trying to win the ballgame.
''That's the approach we're going to take this week and the remainder of the season -- do whatever it takes to win a ballgame with the players we have available.''
