Young Will Study More For Unfamiliar Cardinals

By Benjamin Seamon November 25, 2009

Titans quarterback Vince Young said this week he would spend more time in the film room studying for the Arizona Cardinals defense.

The fourth year quarterback out of the University of Texas has never faced the Cardinals. The last time the two teams met was in 2005 when the Titans lost in Arizona 20-10. The Titans have faced the Cardinals fewer times than any other NFL team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

Young said the Titans short week has not made preparing for the unfamiliar Cardinals any easier.

"Especially as a quarterback, especially when you don't know the team," Young said. "You know, not very familiar like an Indianapolis or a Jacksonville. You have got to get some extra film work. Like I said earlier, I am about to go get some extra film work now and sit down with [Mike] Heimerdinger so that we can get comfortable with what we need to do to go out and execute so we can get a win."

The Titans have only played the Cardinals eight times, and Arizona has won five of the matches. However, Sunday's game in Nashville will mark the first time the Cardinals have ever visited LP Field.

Young said his Thanksgiving plans revolved around getting ready for Sunday's contest.

"Rest, rest and eat and sit back and study. That's pretty much it," Young said. "Like I've said it's a short week for us so I have got to stay in the book."

Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said this week's practices for the Cardinals have been much different from last week's preparation for the Titans game against the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football.

"You know this week is different from last week," Fisher said. "Last week was a highly emotionally charged ball game for obvious reasons. This one, we have a short week. We've got the distraction, the positive distraction in that of the Thanksgiving holiday. In addition to that we are playing a team that we are not familiar with. So we have to become very focused very soon."

One Cardinals defender who the Titans have focused in on this week has been safety Adrian Wilson. The nine-year veteran out of North Carolina State has had an interception in each of Arizona's last two games.

Young said Wilson would be one of the players that he would have to spend extra time studying before Sunday's game.

"I really feel like definitely a good defense," Young said. "Big Wilson, he is a very respectable free safety in the NFL and the things that he does, it's kind of like [Troy] Polamalu in Pittsburgh. He is everywhere around the field. He is kind of the leader of that defense. So we have got to keep our eye on him. He kind of tells us as quarterbacks pretty much what they are trying to do."

With a victory over the Cardinals, Young could extend his winning streak as a starter to nine games, which dates back to 2007. Currently, the former Longhorn has only lost 11 games as a starter compared to 22 wins.
