Titans Finish Day Two Focused On Needs
 | | | | | | Craig Stevens (TE) | William Hayes (DE) | Lavelle Hawkins (WR) | Stanford Keglar (LB) | Cary Williams (CB) |
The Titans spent most of day two looking at needs, finishing the afternoon with five picks, three on defense and two on offense.
''Every pick that we made we were all very excited about it,'' Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said. ''So with that said, the next step is to go coach them. If anybody wants to grade us, so be it.’’
In round seven, the Titans completed their work with cornerback Cary Williams out of division two Washburn.
With three fourth round selections, the team grabbed defensive end William Hayes from Winston Salem State, wide receiver LaVelle Hawkins from California, and linebacker Stanford Keglar of Purdue.
The day began with tight end Craig Stevens from California in round three at 103.
''We addressed some needs and we helped our football team,'' General Manager Mike Reinfeldt said. ''It was a productive day for us.’’

2008 NFL Draft On Titans Radio: First Round
1 (Miami): Jake Long (OT) Michigan
Frank Wycheck: ''No holdouts here. He's signed and he'll be in camp on time. There are some questions if he's a left or right tackle, but he's exactly what Parcells wanted.''
Mike Keith: ''I love the pick. Easily the safest pick the Dolphins could make. They give themselves a chance to run the football.''
2 (St. Louis): Chris Long (DE) Virginia
Frank Wycheck: ''I like this pick because the Rams pair Long with DT Adam Carriker, which will keep quarterbacks' heads on a swivel.''
Mike Keith: ''This guy's a player. He's big, he's strong...he'll be a dominate force for the Rams at end for quite some time.''
3 (Atlanta): Matt Ryan (QB) Boston College
Frank Wycheck: ''The old saying is if you need the quarterback, take the quarterback. This erases the franchise quarterback talk.''
Mike Keith: ''They had to take Matt Ryan here. They need a young guy and Michael Turner will help take the pressure off of him.''
4 (Oakland): Darren McFadden (RB) Arkansas
Frank Wycheck: ''They made a mistake here. They needed help on defensive line and Glenn Dorsey should have been taken.''
Mike Keith: ''I love this guy. He will be a star in this league and Al Davis couldn't help himself. ''
5 (Kansas City): Glenn Dorsey (DT) LSU
Frank Wycheck: ''He absolutely is the next Warren Sapp. He blows people up.''
Mike Keith: ''Kansas City couldn't believe he was there at five.''
6 (New York Jets): Vernon Gholston (DE/LB) Ohio St.
Frank Wycheck: ''He looks great coming off the bus. Can Eric Mangini get the most out of him?''
Mike Keith: ''Not the safest pick but he has a lot of upside. He was the talk of the Combine.''
7 (New Orleans): Sedrick Ellis (DT) USC
Frank Wycheck: ''Great trade for New Orleans. They've got their impact defensive lineman.''
Mike Keith: ''The Patriots trade the pick to save salary cap money. New Orleans desperately wanted him.''
8 (Jacksonville): Derrick Harvey (DE) Florida
Frank Wycheck: ''He's a smaller version of Jevon Kearse.''
Mike Keith: ''The Patriots trade the pick to save salary cap money. New Orleans desperately wanted him.''
9 (Cincinnati): Keith Rivers (LB) USC
Frank Wycheck: ''He's a great player with a great work ethic. He's going to be a great player for Marvin Lewis.''
Mike Keith: ''A no-brainer. They needed linebacker badley and Rivers fell in their lap.''
10 (New England): Jerod Mayo (LB) Tennessee
Frank Wycheck: ''They had Mayo rated higher than Rivers. His stock rose over the last month and you've got to be able to add youth to the older defensive group.''
Mike Keith: ''He gives New England versatility. I thought he was going upper-half of the first round.''
11 (Buffalo): Leodis McKelvin (CB) Troy
Frank Wycheck: ''His punt return ability makes his value very high.''
Mike Keith: ''They're back on the board at #41 and they're needing receiver.''
12 (Denver): Ryan Clady (OT) Boise State
Frank Wycheck: ''This is the safe pick, not a Mike Shanahan pick.''
Mike Keith: ''This is a nod to the fact that they have a young quarterback they need to protect. He's a difference maker at that spot.''
13 (Carolina): Ryan Clady (OT) Boise State
Frank Wycheck: ''The running game gets a boost and Stewart looks like the part that they need to have.''
Mike Keith: ''He's an impact player. He's versatile and a great fit for the Panthers at 13.''
14 (Chicago): Chris Williams (OT) Vanderbilt
Frank Wycheck: ''The Vanderbilt kid is a good blocker and will fit a need for the Bears.''
Mike Keith: ''It was hard to pass up an offensive lineman for them. The ratings were simply higher than taking Mendenhall.''
15 (Kansas City): Branden Albert (OG) Virginia
Frank Wycheck: ''They needed to improve desperately and they definitely did that.''
Mike Keith: ''From a need standpoint, Kansas City has made a great move. They gain two starters in the first round.''
16 (Arizona): Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (CB) TSU
Frank Wycheck: ''Once the eyes were on him, he really took advantage of it. He has great confidence and it was a no-brainer for the Cardinals.''
Mike Keith: ''The decision to move Antrell Rolle to safety opened the door for this pick.''
17 (Detroit): Gosder Cherilus (OT) Boston College
Frank Wycheck: ''He's a physical, tough, competitive tackle who will block for years.''
Mike Keith: ''They moved back and grabbed the offensive linemane they had rated the highest based on where they selected.''
18 (Baltimore): Joe Flacco (QB) Deleware
Frank Wycheck: ''He'll drive just up the road and he'll feel right at home.''
Mike Keith: ''Baltimore liked this guy from the get-go and they set their sites on him and got him.''
19 (Carolina): Jeff Otah (OT) Pittsburgh
Frank Wycheck: ''They had to trade in here and shore up some holes in their offensive line.''
Mike Keith: ''Good trade for Carolina with Philadelphia. Otah dominates with power.''
20 (Tampa Bay): Aqib Talib (CB) Kansas
Frank Wycheck: '' Despite the drug admission that was leaked to the media, Tampa still decides to pick him.''
Mike Keith: ''He's got great ball skills and one of the quicker players in this draft.''
21 (Atlanta): Sam Baker (OT) Kansas
Frank Wycheck: ''He's a hoss, a big guy.''
Mike Keith: ''The Falcons felt they couldn't wait any longer to shore up some offensive line problems.''
22 (Dallas): Felix Jones (RB) Arkansas
Frank Wycheck: ''I think it's a great get. Jerry Jones from Arkansas. Obviously his call all the way.''
Mike Keith: ''Jerry Jones wanted someone to come in to compliment their wide receiving corps. and he fits very well with what they want to do in their return game.''
23 (Pittsburgh): Felix Jones (RB) Arkansas
Frank Wycheck: ''I think it's a great get. Jerry Jones from Arkansas. Obviously his call all the way.''
Mike Keith: ''Jerry Jones wanted someone to come in to compliment their wide receiving corps. and he fits very well with what they want to do in their return game.''
24 (Tennessee): Chris Johnson (RB) East Carolina
Frank Wycheck: ''I'm glad they took the risk and went after him because the has the speed to take it to the house.''
Mike Keith: ''It's a Mike Heimerdinger pick and a stamp on the offense to give them the offense to scare people.''
25 (Dallas): Mike Jenkins (CB) South Florida
Frank Wycheck: ''He had six career interceptions at South Florida. He's a cut tackler, not a wrap up guy. He'll need to be more physical to play with the big boys.''
Mike Keith: ''Jenkins is a good addition for them because he has good speed, quick hips and great ball reaction skills.''
26 (Houston): Duane Brown (OT) Virginia Tech
Frank Wycheck: ''To play offensive tackle you've got to have great lateral movement. Obviously Houston likes what they saw in him.''
Mike Keith: ''This pick surprised me not because of the position but because of the player. There seemed to be some other players rated higher than Brown.''
27 (San Diego): Antoine Cason (CB) Arizona
Frank Wycheck: ''He was a 4-year starter in college, so he'll bring a lot of experience to the Chargers.''
Mike Keith: ''Cason won the 2007 Jim Thorpe Award, given to the top defensive back in college football. A very solid athlete.''
28 (Seattle): Lawrence Jackson (DE) USC
Frank Wycheck: ''Lawrence has the perfect size and frame that you look for in a defensive end. He has a huge wing span and he's very explosive off the line of scrimmage.''
Mike Keith: ''I've heard he has motivation problems, so one has to wonder if he'll be as dedicated as some of the other ends that were on the board for Seattle. He certainly looks the part, though.''
29 (San Francisco): Kentwan Balmer (DT) North Carolina
Frank Wycheck: ''If this guy would show some fire and intensity I would have hoped he would have ended up with the Titans. He'll need to show some passion to get my vote of confidence.''
Mike Keith: ''He was named to the 2nd team All-ACC squad as a senior and can be a real force in the middle if he sets his mind to it.''
30 (New York Jets): Dustin Keller (TE) Purdue
Frank Wycheck: ''He seems to be a very atheltic tight end and is quick enough to get in and out of his cuts and breaks. He'll do well at the next level.''
Mike Keith: ''Dustin had a fantastic Combine and flew up everyone's draft boards.''
31 (New York Giants): Kenny Phillips (S) Miami
Frank Wycheck: ''By far the best safety in this draft, but that isn't saying much because it was a weak class for safeties. Phillips started three seasons for the Hurricanes.''
Mike Keith: ''Kenny is the eighth defensive back taken out of the University of Miami since 2002.''
