Report: Titans will sit Mariota vs. Colts

The Tennessee Titans are expected to keep injured quarterback Marcus Mariota on the bench for Sunday night’s virtual postseason play-in game against the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.Mariota will reportedly test his body in pregame warm-ups, but the Titans (9-6) are expected to turn to Blaine Gabbert against the Colts (9-6). According to Mortensen’s report, the Titans were warned by an independent spine specialist that Mariota could suffer long-term damage by playing Sunday. An AFC wild-card berth at worst is on the line this weekend for the winner and the loser will be eliminated from playoff contention. All eyes have been focused on the status of Mariota, who had not practiced this week until Thursday after being knocked out of last Sunday’s win at Washington with a stinger.Mariota was sacked late in the first half during Tennessee’s 25-16 win in Week 16, the seventh time he has left a game because of injury in his career. This season Mariota is 7-6 as a starter, having completed a career-best 68.9 percent of his passes for 2,528 yards with 11 touchdown passes and eight interceptions in 14 games overall. He has been sacked a career-high 42 times this season.
