'The Freak' Will Go After Johnson Not Flutie |
Johnson To Start At Quarterback Saturday
Bills' coach Wade Phillips surprised most everyone Monday announcing Rob Johnson would start at quarterback in Nashville, instead of Doug Flutie.
Phillips started Johnson Sunday in the regular season finale, a victory over the Colts. Most believed it was simply a chance for Flutie to rest for the playoffs in a game that did not mean anything to the Bills. Johnson threw for 287 yards on a 24 of 32 day.
'My feeling is with either one of them we can win,' Phillips said at his weekly press conference. 'It was a tough decision. It wasn't a haphazard thing.'
The Bills traded for Johnson in 1998, but he went down with an injury in game five. Doug Flutie came in and led Buffalo to the playoffs. This off season, Phillips once again opened the quarterback race, much to the surprise of both quarterbacks and many around the NFL. Flutie finally took the starting job and had played throughout 1999, until Sunday.
