Wycheck Scores First
TD of '99 Season
Titans Finish 13-2 With Steelers Win

In a game that had just about everything -- fumbles, ejections, a safety, interceptions, and long returns -- the Tennessee Titans finally escaped Pittsburgh with a 47-36 win over the Steelers Sunday.

'We accomplished a lot today,' head coach Jeff Fisher said. 'As far as the 13 wins; the sack record for the franchise, and the players are to be congratulated for that. But it all starts now.'

In a game made meaningless by Jacksonville's win over Cincinnati earlier in the day, the Titans offense came out crisp. Tennessee scored on its first possession of the game as Steve McNair hit Frank Wycheck for his first touchdown on the season.

Running back Rodney Thomas had his best day in three years, carrying the ball 21 times for 95 yards. His 21-yard touchdown run gave the Titans a 14-7 lead and meant the end of the day for most of the Tennessee offensive starters.

Neil O' Donnell played the remainder of the game at quarterback throwing for 109 yards on a 6 of 12 performance. He threw two touchodwns, one to Wycheck and one to Michael Roan.

But the Steelers didn't roll over, even after Tennessee built a 31-7 lead at halftime on Jevon Kearse's first fumble return for a touchdown and an Al Del Greco field goal. Pittsburgh scored twice in 13 seconds in the third quarter. But following a Levon Kirkland interception, the Titans defense stood firm, holding Jerome Bettis out of the end zone on 4 straight goal line runs.

The Titans finish 13-3 for the first time in franchise history and become the first 13-3 team since divisional play began in 1970 not to win the division.

'We feel good,' Fisher said. 'I thought our guys played hard. It was a wild game. Anytime you play the Steelers, it's going to be a wild game.
