McNair Leads Titans to a 41-14 Pounding
Steve McNair threw for five touchdowns and 291 yards as the Tennessee Titans pounded the Jacksonville Jaguars 41-14 Sunday at Adelphia Coliseum.
The five touchdowns passing were the most for the franchise since Warren Moon threw for five against the Bengals in 1992.
'We just came out and put together what we had worked on,' McNair said. 'Everybody played a great game.'
McNair spread the ball around, completing nine passes to Frank Wycheck, five to Kevin Dyson, and three each to Eddie George and Jackie Harris. Yancey Thigpen also returned to action for the first time in six games, making two receptions, one for a touchdown.
'We've been talking all year about how important it was to play a perfect game and today we did,' head coach Jeff Fisher said. 'We made plays throwing the football, running it and, of course, on defense.'
Eddie George recorded a 100-yard day against the Jaguars for the first time since 1996, finishing with 26 carries for 102 yards.
The Titans stopped the Jacksonville offense with a Semari Rolle interception as the Jags were driving in the 1st quarter. Then, Tennessee forced Jacksonville into two straight three and outs. On the next drive, the Jags scored, but lost quarterback Mark Brunell to a left knee sprain.
Jay Fiedler replaced Brunell and threw for 101 yards and two interceptions. On the day, the Jaguars finished with 237 yards of total offense. Running back Fred Taylor ran 16 times for just 44 yards.
With the victory, Tennessee clinches at least home playoff game at Adelphia Coliseum. The Titans can win the AFC Central with a victory over Pittsburgh next week and a Jacksonville loss at Cincinnati.
Tennessee ends its home schedule 8-0, the first time the franchise has ever had a undefeated record at home. A record crowd of 66,641 saw the game, setting a new franchise record of 528,890 fans.
