Titans Front Office To Be Busy this Off-Season
When the Titans finish the 2000 season the players get to go home, but the front office will be busy throughout the off-season.
The team is projected to be $9 million over the cap in 2001 and it will be General Manager Floyd Reese’s job to lower that number. To cut the cap figure down there is speculation that Steve McNair will renegotiate his contract, which currently expires in 2001, and sign a long-term deal so the team can resign some of its free agents and draftees.
The key players Reese will have to resign starts on defense. Starting cornerback Samari Rolle, who will be a restricted free agent, will be one of the hottest items on the market. The former Flordia State Seminole was tied for first in the AFC in interceptions this season. Also, defensive end Kenny Holmes, an unrestricted free agent, will be a nice pick up for any team. Holmes racked up eight sacks in 14 games in 2000.
On the offensive side of the ball the key is unrestricted free agent Derrick Mason. He has shown flashes of brillance while playing receiver this year and he has been terrific on special teams. Mason is ranked second in the NFL in kick returns and ranks fifth in the NFL in punt returns. The team will also have to resign starting center Kevin Long and starting guard Benji Olson, both of whom are restricted free agents.
The other restricted and unrestricted free agents include: Guard RFA-Gennaro DiNapoli, linebacker RFA-Greg Favors, cornerback RFA-George McCullough, cornerback RFA-Dainon Sidney, safety RFA-Perry Phenix, defensive tackle RFA-Joe Salave’a, cornerback UFA-Michael Booker, guard UFA-Scott Sanderson, and cornerback UFA-Denard Walker.
