League Says Goodbye To Three Rivers

When the fourth quarter horn sounds this week it will be the end of Three River Stadium's thirty-one year existence in professional football.

Several Titans players have memories of Three Rivers , but probably no one more than quarterback Neil O'Donnell and wide receiver Yancey Thigpen.

'I have a lot of fond memories of Three Rivers Stadium,' O'Donnell said. 'That's where my whole career started and a lot of great players played there.'

O'Donnell connected to Thigpen several times when the players where wearing black and gold.

'I have had some great years in that stadium,' Thigpen said. 'I am going to miss going back and playing there.'

Three Rivers has been home to some of the greatest plays and players professional football has ever seen.

The 'Immaculate Reception' is just one of those such plays. A pass from Terry Bradshaw intended for Frenchy Fuqua bounced off a defender's hands and straight to Franco Harris who ran the ball sixty yards down field and gave the Steelers their first playoff victory, beating the Raiders in 1972.

Other greats include the 'Steel Curtain' defense that quided the team to four championships in the seventies. Mean Joe Greene terrorized the league and helped the team get to four Super Bowls.

The Steelers of 2000 hope to add one more special memory to the stadiums deep tradition when they close out the season against the Washington Redskins on Saturday.
