Titans Happy With 2000 Draft
The 2000 draft may have brought the Titans full circle in their evolution under General Manager Floyd Reese and Head Coach Jeff Fisher.
'When we started, we said we had to get a quarterback. Then, we had to get a running back,' Reese said. 'Now, we've kind of rounded it out. From now on, it's plug a guy in and you can be competitive for some time. Hopefully, just natural attittion takes place and you keep evolving.'
Seven of the Titans' ten draft picks were defensive players, where the Titans looked to upgrade the linebacker
and safety positions. As a total package, Reese said the draft class represented a group of playmakers who can contribute. The defensive upgrade and the addition of playmakers both ranked as high priorities for the franchise coming into the weekend.
'We feel like the draft went very, very well,' Reese said. 'We'll get contributions from virtually every area. They're great athletes. That may be the real crux of the draft. I think we have a couple of kids that will come in here and play a lot.'
The Titans did add offensive depth with the addition of a tight end, running back/fullback and offensive lineman. There had been discussions about adding a wide receiver with speed to give the team a change up offensively. The two speed receivers identified by the Titans, R. Jay Soward and Dennis Northcutt, were gone before pick 32.
'From the standopint of priority, receiver was not high on the list,' head coach Jeff Fisher said. 'We feel comfortable with how we lineup across the board offensively.'
The work continues for Tennessee's draft team as they look to sign undrafted free agents to round out the roster. The group includes several offensive linemen.
'There's a grtoup up there we really, really like that we're trying to sign as free agents,' Reese said.
