Fisher: Bengals Game Summed Up Season
By Larry Stone January 7, 2002
Head coach Jeff Fisher said the Titans' 23-21 loss to Cincinnati summarized the problems of this season.
'Our offense's ability to strike, to make the big plays down the field...we've been striving to do those kinds of things over the last couple of years and finally this year we did it,' Fisher said.
Yet, Fisher said the offense could not take full advantage because of penalties that stopped drives. The Titans finished the game with 11 penalties for 95 yards, including several that backed the team out of field goal range.
On defense, Fisher said the team had chances to make plays just as they had all season.
'A third and 14 and their hands on the ball and the ball lands in Darnay Scott's hands, the drive continues and we give up a play,' Fisher said.
During the final team meeting, Fisher said he encouraged the players to get away and rest, and to avoid the blame game.
'We all have our reasons, our answers,' Fisher said. 'We all have spent a great deal of discussing with one another where we feel the problems are.'
The frustration about the season bubbled over Sunday when safety Perry Phenix and cornerback DeRon Jenkins were involved in a shoving match along the sideline.
'On the outside, the appearance is that the foundation is cracking, the place is in shambles, we're falling apart,' Fisher said. 'This is a team that hates loving. Losing is hard to deal with. The thing on the sideline was ridiculous. It was a result of failing to win games.'
