Matthews: 'Good Chance This Is Last Year'
By Larry Stone January 2, 2002
Titans offensive lineman Bruce Matthews appeared a little closer to retirement Wednesday, calling it a 'good chance' that 2001 would be his final season.
'There's a lot of things I'm still considering,' Matthews said. 'I'm pretty sure, I mean there's a good chance this is my last year. But by the same token, I'm not willing to commit to that.'
Matthews comments came on the heels on his 14th selection to the 2002 Pro Bowl Wednesday.
'I guess I'm going to wait until the off-season, let some time go by, heal up a little bit, and hopefully, things will be real obvious.'
Matthews said family would most likely be the reason for his retirement as he has two teenage children.
'When we moved up here, I didn't think I was going to be up here this many years,' Matthews said. 'My family has really been blessed by the whole experience of being up here.'
Though he has talked retirement and changed his mind in past years, Matthews said this is as close as he has come to actually saying goodbye to the game.
'I'm thinking things that I've never thought before,' Matthews said. 'It wouldn't be so bad not to play any more and come out and watch.'
