Matthews And Kearse Only Pro Bowlers
Staff Report January 2, 2002
The NFL named Titans offensive lineman Bruce Matthews and defensive end Jevon Kearse to the 2002 Pro Bowl squad Wednesday.
For Matthews, it is a 14th straight visit to the Pro Bowl, equaling the record by Merlin Olsen. Kearse goes for a third straight time.
'I'm not amazed, a lot of people are amazed that Bruce is still be selected,' Head Coach Jeff Fisher said.
The league named quarterback Steve McNair, punter Craig Hentrich, and tackle Brad Hopkins as alternates. They will go to Honolulu should the player ahead of them not be able to play.
'The Pro Bowl selection often times people think it's an individual thing,' Fisher said. 'I think this year's selections were indicative that this is a team award. Last year we had eight or nine, we won 13 games. This year, we won seven and we've got two.'
'I think our quarterback, without question in my mind, had a Pro Bowl year,' Fisher said. 'I think he was very deserving of it.'
