Running Back Jerome Bettis May Miss Third Game |
AFC Central Roundup: Bettis Again Doubtful, Smith On Injured Reserve
Staff Report December 19, 2001
The Steelers may be without running back Jerome Bettis for a third straight week as they take on Detroit Sunday.
Steelers coach Bill Cowher listed Bettis as doubtful because of a groin injury.
'It is really relative to where you are in regards to our football team in the post-season and trying to do things that keep everybody healthy going in [to the playoffs] and not to jeopardize the opportunity we have to secure the home-field advantage,' Cowher told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. 'We don't want to do that, but you have to weigh what is important.'
The Steelers can clinch homefield advantage with a win and a Miami loss this weekend.

Cincinnati placed quarterback Akili Smith on injured reserve Tuesday with a torn hamstring.
Smith made his first start of the season on Sunday before being injured in the second quarter of the Bengals 15-14 loss to the Jets.

Reversing his comments from Sunday afternoon, Browns President Carmen Policy apologized to the Jaguars organization and their players after Sunday's bottle-throwing incident in Cleveland.
'My apology is to the Cleveland community and the vast, vast majority of the fans who support the Cleveland Browns,' Policy said. 'I attempted to defend this community and the fans who are not only incredible people but some of the best fans in all of professional sport.'
