Fisher: Washington Penalty Could Have Been Roughing
Staff Report January 12, 2003

Though Steelers coach Bill Cowher said Dewayne Washington should not have been called for running into the kicker on the Titans' overtime try, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said the penalty could have been worse.

''I actually felt that was in that gray area between running into the kicker and roughing the kicker,'' Fisher said Sunday. ''That could have gone either way.''

Washington hit Nedney as the kicker followed through on the overtime field goal attempt. Officials called the five-yard running into the kicker penalty.

Fisher also said he did not dispute the unnecessary roughing penalty on defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

''You can't take somebody and slam them to the ground especially after the whislte was blown,'' Fisher said. ''Now, you dont know what time the whistle was blown and what he heard, and what he didn't hear.''

Fisher also confirmed that he did not expect a helmet-to-helmet call on the play that knocked running back Eddie George out with a concussion.

''There's no point in the game where a flag is going to be thrown for helmet-to-helmet contact on a running back on a running play,'' Fisher said.

Fisher also refused to comment on the exchange between he and quarterback Tommy Maddox.

''There were some things said from their offensive huddle to our bench which create very serious problems sometimes and we got it under control as quicky as we could,'' Fisher said. ''We were minding our own business.''
