Former Oiler Bethea Among Hall Of Fame Finalists
Staff Report January 6, 2003
The Pro Football Hall of Fame named defensive end Elvin Bethea, an original member of the Oilers/Titans Hall of Fame, as a 2003 finalist.
Bethea played for the Oilers from 1968 to 1983, earning eight Pro Bowl nominations. Bethea led the Oilers in quarterback sacks six times, including a 17-sack season in 1973. He became one of only five players to have his jersey number retired.
The Hall Of Fame named a total of 15 finalists Monday for induction. At least four and no more than seven new members will be inducted next summer. The final announcement will be made January 25.
Joining Bethea on the list are first-time candidates Marcus Allen and Gary Zimmerman. Others nominated include quarterback Ken Stabler, wide receivers James Lofton and Art Monk, cornerback Lester Hayes, defensive end Claude Humphrey, linebackers Harry Carson and Randy Gradishar, and offensive linemen Joe DeLamielleure and Bob Kuechenberg.
