One day after finishing the season 6-10, the Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly fired head coach Tom Coughlin.
Owner Wayne Weaver said he expects to hire a new head coach within the next month, or sooner, but said the decision was not an easy one to make.
''This is a particularly tough day for me,''Weaver said. ''I want to thank Tom publicly. Any decision Tom ever made was made in the best interests of this football team.
''It's not all about wins and losses. There's a point at which you say we need innovative ideas and fresh approaches,'' Weaver said. ''In my heart it's
the right decision.''
Weaver indicated that much of the coaching staff could be changed as the transition is made to a new head coach.
'I think we've got a lot of changes to make to get back to competing at the highest level,'' Weaver said. ''I'm optimistic we're going to start rebuilding this football
team.''
''We've got a lot of holes to fill.''
In other coaching news, Cincinnati head coach Dick Lebeau was released on Monday, as was Dallas coach Dave Campo, after finishing with his third consecutive 5-11 season.
Bengals owner Mike Brown said that he will not hire a general manager for the team, although he has taken much criticism for his system in Cincinnati. The team finished the season 2-14, the worst record in franchise history.
Dallas owner Jerry Jones said he hopes to be able to announce a replacement for Campo as early as Tuesday and hopefully no later than the end of the week.
There is much speculation that former Giants, Jets, and Patriots coach, and current ESPN analyst, Bill Parcells will be given the job within the next few days.
