Williams Runs Wild As Dolphins Win 24-10
By Chase Williams December 24, 2005

Tennessee allowed a 100-yard rusher for the third straight week as Miami running back Ricky Williams rushed 26 times for 172 yards, including 82 in the fourth quarter, and a touchdown to lead the Dolphins past Tennessee 24-10 Saturday at Dolphins Stadium.

Miami quarterback Gus Frerotte threw two touchdown passes to receiver Chris Chambers. Chambers finished with five catches for 51 yards, while Frerotte completed 14 of 30 passes for 151 yards and also had an interception.

The Dolphins outgained the Titans in total yardage (322 to 234) and totaled 19 first downs to Tennessee’s 11. Miami’s 192 rushing yards were a hundred better than Tennessee’s 92. The Dolphins got into the endzone three of their four trips to the redzone for a 75% success rate compared to the Titans, who did not convert either of their two chances.

Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said Miami simply outplayed Tennessee.

‘’We got outplayed in a number of areas,’’ Fisher said. ‘’We knew they could run it. We had a great deal of respect for Ricky…but I didn’t expect him to be able to do that to our defense.’’

Fisher noted that Miami’s run and tight defense were the deciding factors.

‘’Obviously, their defensive effort in the redzone and their running game was certainly a difference in this ballgame,’’ Fisher added.

Tennessee’s offense did not play well. The Titans turned the ball over three times and Craig Hentrich punted nine times. Backup quarterback Billy Volek completed 14 of 24 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. Volek entered the game late in the second quarter for Steve McNair, who aggravated a strained pectoral muscle injury he suffered during pregame warm-ups. McNair totaled 34 yards on five of 13 passing and two interceptions before leaving. Receiver Drew Bennett caught four passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Running back Travis Henry ran 16 times for 65 yards.

Defensively for Tennessee, safety Tank Williams led the team with six tackles and also recovered a fumble caused by defensive end Kyle VandenBosch, who recorded three stops. Linebacker Keith Bulluck had five tackles including a sack while defensive tackle Randy Starks notched 1.5 sacks. Safety Lamont Thompson added three tackles and an interception.

Miami kicked off to Tennessee to start the game Sunday.

The Titans managed one first down on their way to the Miami 44-yard line before punting to the Dolphins at their own eight-yard line.

Miami gained two first downs, one off a Marty Booker 23-yard reception, before kicking back to the Titans at their own 20-yard line.

Tennessee’s offensive woes continued on their ensuing drive as they went three-and-out before Hentrich punted to the Dolphins.

Miami would not fare much better after getting the ball as they gained a single first down before punting again.

Tennessee repeated their previous offensive possession as they again went three-and-out and punted.

The Titans finally got a break on Miami’s ensuing possession when VandenBosch knocked the ball out of the hands of Frerotte at the Miami 15-yard line on second down. Williams recovered and advanced the ball to the 10-yard line where he was brought down.

The Titans would not be able to get six and settled for a Rob Bironas 24-yard field goal to put Tennessee on top 3-0 with 1:49 remaining in the first quarter.

The Dolphins got the ball back and ended the quarter with the ball at their own 38-yard line on third down.

Starks and defensive end Travis LaBoy sacked Frerotte for a seven-yard loss on third down to start the second quarter and force a Donnie Jones punt.

Henry would gain a first down on the next possession before the Titans were again forced to punt.

Miami would produce a single offensive yard on their next drive before kicking back to the Titans.

The Dolphins would get the ball right back on first down McNair’s pass was tipped by tight end Ben Troupe after sailing too high and picked off by Miami linebacker Donnie Spragan at the Tennessee 41-yard line.

Frerotte hit Booker for 12 yards on first down and Williams ran four times for 22 yards to get the Dolphins to the seven-yard line. Miami would not get any closer and would settle for an Olindo Mare 25-yard field goal to even the score at 3-3 with 7:31 left in the first half.

McNair would continue to struggle after Tennessee regained possession as his deep ball intended for Bennett was intercepted by Dolphins cornerback Sam Madison at the Miami 39-yard line where he was brought down.

After Frerotte found tight end Randy McMichael for 19 yards on second down, the Dolphins used five straight running plays to get to the Tennessee 11-yard line on second down. Frerotte would find Chambers in the front right corner of the endzone from there and Mare nailed the extra point to give Miami a 10-3 advantage with 2:48 remaining in the second quarter.

Volek replaced McNair, who suffered a strained left pectoral muscle on the previous drive, on the ensuing series. Tennessee would continue to struggle as they went three-and-out before kicking back to the Dolphins.

After a defensive holding penalty on Albert Haynesworth, Frerotte hit McMichael and Williams for nine yards to the Tennessee 34-yard line where they faced third down and one. Frerotte took it himself for two yards to get the first down on the next play. From there, Frerotte hit Booker for 15 yards and McMichael for 10 more to get the Dolphins to the seven-yard line. Frerotte and Chambers hooked up for their second touchdown throw-and-catch of the day on the ensuing play and Mare again converted the point after to extend the Miami lead to 17-3 with 27 seconds remaining in the first half.

Volek remained in the game for Tennessee on the ensuing drive but could not generate much on the drive and the teams headed to the locker room with the Dolphins up 17-3.

Tennessee kicked off to the Dolphins to start the second half.

Miami went three-and-out after Starks sacked Frerotte on third down forcing the Dolphins to punt.

The Titans started driving from the Miami 47-yard line. After Volek hit tight end Erron Kinney and Bennett for seven yards, Henry ran five straight times for 34 yards to the five-yard line. Tennessee would not get any closer as they suffered an incomplete pass, a lost yardage play, and a penalty. On third and goal from the 10-yard line, Dolphins defensive end and former Titan Kevin Carter sacked Volek, who fumbled and defensive end Vonnie Holliday recovered at the 16-yard line.

The Titans would catch a break three plays later when Thompson intercepted Frerotte's deep pass intended for Chambers at the Tennessee 39-yard line where he was brought down. The Titans would not capitalize on the opportunity, however, gaining only one first down before punting back to Miami.

The Dolphins got the ball back but suffered the same results, gaining a single first down before punting.

Tennessee ended the quarter with two first downs to give them possession at the Miami 45-yard line as the third quarter ended with the Dolphins up 17-3.

After ending the third quarter with two straight first downs, the Titans would manage only four more yards on the drive before punting back to Miami.

Tennessee’s defense stepped up on the ensuing drive allowing Miami only a single yard and forcing a punt after three-and-out.

The Titans got right back in the game fast on first down when Volek found Bennett deep down the right sideline. Bennett beat former Titan safety Lance Schulters leaping high for the ball and took it to the endzone for the 55-yard touchdown. Bironas nailed the point after to cut the Miami lead to 17-10 with 12:20 left in the game.

After an offensive pass interference penalty pushed them back 10 yards on first down, Miami would not recover for a first down and would punt.

Tennessee gained two first downs on the ensuing drive, one off a Miami illegal contact penalty, before stalling and punting back to the Dolphins.

Miami would continue the punting trend as they gained a first down on their drive before kicking back to the Titans.

Tennessee, with a chance to tie the score, managed nine yards on the next drive before not converting on third and one to force a Hentrich punt.

Taking over possession at their own 37-yard line with 2:21 remaining in the contest, the Dolphins used the running game to seal the win. Williams rushed three times for 44 yards, including a 35-yard scamper, to get Miami to the Tennessee 19-yard line on third down. Williams would seal the deal on the following play, rushing around the right end, through the Tennessee secondary, and into the endzone for the score. Mare nailed the extra point to give the Dolphins a 24-10 lead with only 1:48 left in the game.

Tennessee would not be able to effectively move the ball on the ensuing drive as they turned the ball over on downs to the Dolphins.

Frerotte took a knee to end the game and give Miami a 24-10 victory.

In addition to McNair, receiver Tyrone Calico pulled a hamstring, and Troupe and running back Chris Brown sprained ankles.

The Dolphins improve to 8-7 with the win and travel to New England to battle the Patriots next Sunday. Tennessee falls to 4-11 and returns to Florida for the second consecutive week to wrap up the regular season against Jacksonville on New Year’s Day. Kickoff from Alltel Stadium is scheduled for 3:05p (CST) with Titans Radio coverage set for 2p (CST).
