James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy, was found dead in a Tampa-area apartment early Thursday morning.
Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher sent his sympathies to the Dungy family after the Titans finished their last practice Thursday afternoon at Baptist Sports Park.
''I don’t know if there are words available to comfort him and his family right now - and the organization for that matter,'' Fisher said. ''It's certainly a tremendous tragedy.''
According to NFL.com, Dungy is in Tampa to be with his immediate family while assistant head coach Jim Caldwell will assume head coaching duties until Dungy's return. Fisher said that the NFL will act as a family for Dungy on a much larger scale.
''The one thing that is unique about the National Football League is that it is a family,'' Fisher said. ''It's a family from the top down. Each organization is an individual family and when it comes time to grieve one has to turn to our family. He's got a very strong immediate family support system and it's a very close organization and only time will heal the broken hearts in this situation. It's very difficult.''
Fisher said that when tragedies such as this strike, it reminds players and coaches throughout the league that football is miniscule compared to things such as this.
''There are sudden reminders throughout the year, throughout the off season, throughout life for that matter that quickly put things into perspective and this is just one of them,'' Fisher said.
Fisher said he has not contacted Dungy or the Colts organization, but said the Colts will pull through.
''We have to give them some time,'' Fisher said. ''It's going to be a difficult trip for them to Seattle, but they'll find some strength in one another and they'll get through it.''
''Tony is a strong man,'' Fisher said. ''He really is. He's a great example for coaches at any level from a leadership standpoint and he'll get through this. It's not going to be easy but he'll get through it.''
