Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren said he’s looking forward to his first time playing the Tennessee Titans.
The match up between the two teams will be the first since the Oilers became the Titans. In their last meeting in 1998, the Seahawks defeated the Tennessee Oilers 20-18 in Seattle.
Holmgren took over the Seattle coaching job from Dennis Erickson in 1999. Holmgren lead the 1997 Green Bay Packers to their first championship since Super Bowl II.
''I’m looking forward to my first time there,'' Holmgren said. ''I understand it’s a wonderful stadium and the fans are great. We know it’s a tough game to play on the road there.''
Holmgren said with the tough environment at the Coliseum will help his team.
''With our young team, anytime you can become a little more battle tested in a situation like that, I think it helps you down the road,'' Holmgren said. ''So, we know we’re going to have our hands full.''
The Seahawks go into Sunday’s game against the Titans having won their last two games by a combined score of 83-3. However, Holmgren said that he’s been harder on his squad more so than usual.
''I have a tendency to be a little kinder to them when it’s tough than when we blow out people,'' Holmgren said. ''So I’ve been a little rough on them in the last couple of weeks.''
Seattle’s Shaun Alexander has been part of putting up those 83 points. Alexander leads the NFL in rushing yardage. The former Alabama running back needs just four more yards to reach the 1,500 yard mark. Holmgren said Alexander’s finally starting to get the coverage the sixth-year back deserves.
The Seahawks sit atop the NFC with an 11-2 record. They can clinch homefield advantage or a first round bye this week with help from other teams.
