The Indianapolis Colts showed why they are the NFL’s best team as they dominated the Tennessee Titans on both sides of the ball Sunday at the RCA Dome on their way to a 35-3 win.
The victory continued Indy’s unbeaten season as they improved to 12-0, and also extended their winning streak over Tennessee to six.
Quarterback Peyton Manning connected on 13 of 17 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Edgerrin James rushed 28 times for 107 yards and a score. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison caught four passes for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Reggie Wayne hauled in three balls for 50 yards and a touchdown. Defensive tackle Larry Tripplett returned a Steve McNair fumble, which was caused by a Dwight Freeney sack, 60 yards to paydirt.
Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher talked about taking advantage of the few opportunities Indy gives teams.
‘’If somebody’s going to have a chance to beat this team before this season is over, they’re going to have to take advantage of every opportunity that’s presented to them,’’ Fisher said. ‘’We had some opportunities but obviously we couldn’t take advantage of them to give us a chance to keep this game close.’’
Indianapolis outgained the Titans in total yardage 292 to 260. Each team had a turnover and were similar in penalties (seven for 35 yards for Tennessee to five for 33 yards for the Colts) but Indy scored all three times they were in the redzone while the Titans did not convert either of their trips. The Colts sacked Tennessee quarterbacks four times for minus 30 yards while the Titans did not get to Manning.
For the Titans, McNair went 22 of 33 for 220 yards, mostly to the tight ends. Ben Troupe had five receptions for 67 yards, while Bo Scaife caught six passes for 53 yards. Cornerback Pacman Jones returned six kickoffs for a 28.5-yard average and a long of 53 yards. Kicker Rob Bironas got the only Tennessee points in the game on his 24-yard field goal after missing a 51-yard attempt.
Indianapolis kicked off to Tennessee to start the game.
The Titans managed one first down on the drive before punting to the Colts.
Indianapolis got the ball at their own 20-yard line. The Colts would make their way to the Tennessee 10-yard line on a drive highlighted by Manning’s 36-yard pass to Harrison. Manning hooked up with Harrison for a touchdown from there and Vanderjagt converted the extra point to give Indy a 7-0 lead with 8:08 left in the first quarter.
Tennessee started their next drive at their own 15-yard line. The Titans would gain two straight first downs on their way to the 49-yard line before being forced to punt.
The Colts would not be able to generate much offense on their next drive as they went three-and-out and punted.
Tennessee got the ball back at their own 25-yard line. McNair’s 11-yard pass to Scaife for a first down at the 44-yard line was the quarter’s final play.
Tennessee started the second quarter driving from their own 44-yard line on first down.
McNair was sacked by Freeney for a six-yard loss. Running back Chris Brown rushed for four yards and McNair hit Troupe for 11 yards to get to fourth down and one on the Indy 47-yard line. Brown then charged ahead for two yards to get the first down.
Tennessee would get to the 20-yard line on third down when Jones, playing running back, was tackled for a 13-yard loss. Bironas came on to attempt a 51-yard field goal but the kick sailed wide left and the Colts took over.
Manning completed three passes for 32 yards and James rushed four times for 19 yards to help Indianapolis get to the Tennessee 13-yard line. Manning hit tight end Bryan Fletcher in the endzone from there and Vanderjagt nailed the extra point to extend the Colts lead to 14-0 with 4:11 left in the second quarter.
After Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 36 yards to the Tennessee 45-yard line, McNair completed four passes for 39 yards to help the Titans drive to the Indy six-yard line on third down. Troupe would drop a pass in the endzone and Tennessee would settle for a Bironas 24-yard field goal to make it 14-3 with only 29 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Colts would take a knee to end the half and head to the locker room leading 14-3.
Tennessee kicked off to the Colts to start the third quarter.
After losing two yards on first down, Manning hit tight end Dallas Clark over the middle for 22 yards to get to the Indy 48-yard line. From there, James would rush six times for 20 yards, including a crucial fourth down conversion, to help the Colts get to the Tennessee 27-yard line. Manning would hit Wayne over the middle in the endzone from there and Vanderjagt converted the point after to give the Colts a 21-3 lead with 9:40 remaining in the third quarter.
Tennessee got the ball on their own 30-yard line after the kickoff. On third down and eight, McNair hit Scaife for 14 yards to the 46-yard line. McNair connected with Troupe for 14 more yards two plays later, but was injured with a shin contusion on the play and left the game for the remainder of the drive. Backup quarterback Billy Volek came in to replace McNair. The Titans would drive to the Indy 31-yard line on fourth down but would not convert and the Colts retained possession.
James would touch the ball on every play on the ensuing drive, catching two passes and rushing five times, including a 21-yard run to the Tennessee two-yard line. James would run it into the endzone from there and Vanderjagt converted the extra point to give the Colts a 28-3 advantage with 1:28 left in the third quarter.
The Titans got the ball back and ended the quarter driving from their own 39-yard line on fourth down and one. McNair returned to the game.
The fourth quarter started with Tennessee driving on fourth and one. McNair rushed for no gain and Indianapolis got the ball back.
Two plays later, James fumbled the ball on the handoff and Titans linebacker Brad Kassell recovered it at the Tennessee 37-yard line. The Titans drove to the Indy 26-yard line on third down when Freeney sacked McNair knocking the ball in the air at the 40-yard line. Tripplett snagged the ball and rumbled 60 yards to paydirt. Vanderjagt’s point after made the score 35-3 with 11:44 remaining in the game.
Tennessee got the ball back at the Indy 46-yard line after Jones returned the kickoff 53 yards. McNair completed five passes for 41 yards to help the Titans set up on the two-yard line. Four straight passes into the endzone fell incomplete and the Colts retained possession.
The Colts would get as far as the 14-yard line before punting to the Titans.
Volek came in to finish the game for McNair. Starting at their own 47-yard line, the Titans got to the Indy 35-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Colts backup quarterback Jim Sorgi kneeled to run the final 37 seconds off the clock and give the Colts a 35-3 win.
Tennessee tight end Erron Kinney and receiver Roydell Williams left the game with injuries and did not return.
The AFC South-leading Colts will try to keep their undefeated season next week at Jacksonville. The Titans drop to 3-9 and will come home to face the Texans next Sunday. Kickoff at the Coliseum is set for 12p (cst) with Titans Radio coverage slated for 11a (cst).
