Two Utes Head To Mid South
Staff Report April 30, 2006

The Titans used their last two picks of the draft on teammates from Utah.

Outside linebacker Spencer Toone and running back Quinton Ganther are the last two players added to the Titans through the draft.

Ganther, a multi-purpose back who many considered a late fourth round pick, received All Mountain West Conference honors in 2005. Ganther had 205 carries for 1,120 yards and also added 25 catches for 314 yards.

Mike Detillier, author of the M & D Draft Report, ranked Ganther the 23rd best halfback in the draft. During the Combine, Ganther ran a 4.5 40-time and benched 29 reps of 225-pounds.

''Quinton is a tough inside runner who is extremely strong in the lower body,'' Detillier said. ''He displays very good body balance and lean. He shows a real quick initial burst up the field and he clearly sees the cutback lanes.''

What Detillier doesn't mention is Ganther's blocking abilities, something that Ganther said is his biggest strength.

''A lot of guys want the ball and I love to run the ball also, but my thing is I'm going to protect the quarterback. That's what separates me from other running backs.''

''I will do everything I can to make the team,'' Ganther said. ''They drafted me and now it's time for me to show them I'm worthy of the draft pick.''

Spencer Toone is the third linebacker drafted by the Titans in this years draft, a position that will have a lot of competition once camp begins.

Toone (6'1'', 230 llbs) became a three year starter during his years at Utah and received All-Mountain West Conference honors the past two seasons. Toone led the team in tackles (113) as a senior and added 2.5 sacks.

''I'm happy to be a Titan,'' Toone said.

The Titans traded their second selection of the seventh round back to Indianapolis in exchange for a future sixth round pick in 2007. The Titans had gained the pick in exchange for LB Rocky Calmus earlier this off season.
