Pick 215 Nets Titans Samford DB
Staff Report April 30, 2006

The Titans selected Samford defensive back Cortland Finnegan with the 215th selection in the NFL Draft.

Finnegan played free safety at Samford, registering All-OVC honors for his play at defensive back and return specialist in 2005.

''I'm a cornerback, a safety, a kick returner, whatever the Titans need me for,'' Finnegan said. ''Where ever I'm a fit for the Titans.''

The Milton, Florida native led the Bulldogs in tackles for the third straight year with 98 total stops. Finnegan registered one interception and seven pass break ups in 2005.

Finnegan was hanging out with friends at a local mall when he received a call from Coach Fisher congratulating him on being a new member to the Titans organization.

''[Coach Fisher] really likes what I can do,'' Finnegan said. ''I've just got to prove myself. Of course being drafted in the seventh round, you still have to prove yourself so that's the direction I'm going to take.''

Finnegan runs a 4.3 40-yard time and said speed will be the main adjustment that he will have to make from the OVC to the NFL.

''Speed is the big factor in the NFL,'' Finnegan said. ''But just prepare yourself and I'll be fine.''

Finnegan also averaged an OVC-best 15.1 yards per punt return and ranked second in the Conference in kickoff returns with 25.1 yards per attempt.
