Heading into the game against the Bills, the Titans were one of the least penalized teams in the NFL. However, the Titans recorded their most penalties in a game this season in their victory on Sunday.
Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said that the Titans had to rise above the penalties in order to come away with their sixth straight victory.
''Today was a great win for us considering the fact that every time we were getting ready to do something we did something wrong,'' Fisher said. ''We had a lot of penalties today and we were able to overcome the penalties.''
On Sunday the Titans were penalized 11 times for 81-yards, nearly double their season average. For the season, the Titans averaged just 5.6 penalties per game for 45.6 yards. Heading into the game against the Bills, the Titans averaged one penalty every 10.46 plays
Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said that the victory in spite of the penalties is a reflection of the teams growth throughout the season.
''We overcame a lot of penalties,'' Schwartz said. ''That’s one thing that was not pretty about this game is penalties. Good teams can overcome them. We overcame them today. ''
One of the more perplexing penalty situations came at the end of the first half. With 0:01 left on the clock, Titans kicker Rob Bironas kicked the ball off out of bounds. The penalty moved the ball to the Bills 40-yard line. On the following play, Bills quarterback J.P. Losman connected with wide receiver Josh Reed to the Titans eight-yard line as time expired. However, a facemask penalty on Titans defensive lineman Tony Brown allowed the Bills to run one final play that resulted in a 21-yard field goal.
Schwartz said that situations like that caused the game to come down to the final seconds.
''We shouldn’t have been in the situation we were in a lot of times without penalties,'' Schwartz said. ''I think penalties ended up giving them 12 of their points. That’s one thing that we can’t have.''
