On a cold Christmas Eve in Buffalo, the Titans overcame a resilient Bills team and penalties to leave Ralph Wilson Stadium with a 30-29 victory.
''This was without a doubt a very satisfying win for this team,'' Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said. ''It kind of sums up what we are about.''
The Bills came out of the gate strong against the Titans. Bills cornerback Terrence McGee took the opening kickoff 52-yards to the Titans 46-yard line. The return doubled his kickoff return average of 26.4 yards, which is fifth best in the league.
From there the Bills drove 43-yards on nine plays to the Titans 3-yard line, but were unable to reach the endzone as the Titans defense stiffened. Bills kicker Rian Lindell put the Bills on the scoreboard first on a 21-yard field goal to give Buffalo a 3-0 lead.
The Titans quickly responded on their opening possession. In the cold Buffalo air, Titans quarterback Vince Young completed passes of 22-yards and 16-yards as the Titans drove down the field. Young then found Titans wide receiver Bobby Wade for a 22-yard touchdown completion to make the score 7-3.
Young had yet another stellar performance this week against the Bills. Young threw for 183-yards on 13-of-20 passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Young also ran for 81-yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow said that Young continues to progress as the season goes along.
''He's doing a great job,'' Chow said. ''He missed a couple of reads that I'm sure he'll be upset about but that just normal growth and development. ''
The Bills turned to the ground game on their next possession. Running back Willis McGahee and the Bills drove 71-yards on 10 plays to take a 10-7 lead behind a McGahee's sixth rushing touchdown of the season.
On the Titans next possession, Titans running back Travis Henry, in his return to Buffalo, had a 30-yard run to reach 1,000 yards for the season. Henry ran for 135-yards on 25 carries against his former team.
The Bills next drive ended shortly after Titans safety Chris Hope recorded his fifth interception of the season. Titans linebacker Peter Sirmon tipped Bills quarterback J.P. Losman pass that fell into Hope's hands. For the game, Losman threw for 266-yards on 19-of-33 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions.
After a Titans punt, the Bills drove 36-yards ending with Lindell connecting on a 45-yard field goal. The Bills led 16-13 with 0:48 left in the half.
Young led the Titans down to the 36-yard line with 0:14 left to go. Facing 4th-and-2, Young ran for a 36-yard touchdown with 0:01 left in the half. The score is the sixth rushing touchdown of the season for Young, which is highest among all quarterbacks. The run also gave Young over 500-rushing yards for the season, which is the first time a rookie quarterback has ever reached that milestone.
The Bills got the ball at the 40-yard line after the kickoff went out of bounds. Losman connected with wide receiver Josh Reed on a 53-yard pass down to inside the Titans 10-yard line as time expired. However, a facemask penalty on defensive lineman Tony Brown resulted in an untimed down where the Bills and Lindell connected on a 21-yard field goal to make the score 20-19 at halftime.
After the Titans punted on the opening possession of the third quarter, the Bills struck quickly as Losman connected with Bills wide receiver Lee Evans on a 37-yard touchdown. The touchdown is Evan's seventh of the season, and 14th catch of 20 or more yards in his three-year career. The Bills led 26-20.
The Bills would add a fifth field goal from Rian Lindell to make the score 29-20 at the end of the third quarter.
After registering just ten net yards of total offense in the third quarter, Young responded on the following drive by connecting with his favorite target of the day Brandon Jones on a 29-yard touchdown pass to make the score 29-27. The catch gave Jones his first 100-yard game of his career and a team-high four receiving touchdowns this season.
''Vince's throw to Brandon on third down was an unusual call on third down,’’ Fisher said. '' It was a great call and big play for us on Brandon's touchdown.''
With 2:10 left to go in the game, the Titans converted a 14-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:15 of the fourth quarter as Bironas connected on a 30-yard field goal. The Titans took the lead 30-29.
The Bills drove down to the 28-yard line of the Titans. Facing fourth-and-5, the Bills went for it instead of kicking into the win instead of attempting a 42-yard field goal.
''I knew what our range was, you saw it,'' Fisher said. ''Our range was the 25, and that was barely enough (against the wind). You can't second guess anything that (Bills Head Coach Dick Jauron) does here because they definitely have a tremendous home-field advantage in this wind. They know how to use the wind. Apparently he felt it was a little out of his range.''
Titans cornerback Reynaldo Hill recorded his second interception in as many weeks as he sealed the victory for the Titans. The win gives Tennessee its first six-game winning streak since 2003 and hope for the playoffs.
Hill said that he was in the right place at the right time for the play.
''We had the right play called,'' Hill said. ''(Losman) rolled out and just tried to make a miracle play, and I was right there to intercept the ball.''
Fisher said that while the Titans are glad they are still alive in the playoff race, the team has a lot to work on for the future.
''We have got a lot of work ahead, we have some bumps and bruises to work through,'' Fisher said. ''But Merry Christmas.''
