Scenarios Give Titans Faint Playoff Hopes
By Evan Dennison December 21, 2006

A lot of help is needed if the once 0-5 Titans are to receive a WildCard berth in the playoffs.

The Titans are currently one game out for the two final wild card spots, there are four teams ahead of them. Cincinnati, Denver, Jacksonville, and the New York Jets are at 8-6. The Titans are tied with three teams at 7-7. Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Buffalo are at .500.

Here is what the Titans need.

Cincinnati and Denver play each other this Sunday but both have a better conference record than the Titans, which is the first tiebreaker if the two teams have identical records and have not played each other. So the loser of the Cincy-Denver game would need to lose the final game as well. The Bengals play Pittsburgh at home to close out the year and Denver hosts San Francisco.

Jacksonville finishes the season out with a home game against New England and travels to Kansas City for the final game. The Titans would need the Jaguars to lose one of those games. The Titans own the tiebreaker over Jacksonville due to a better division record.

The New York Jets play at Miami on Christmas Day and host Oakland the final game of the season. Tennessee would need New York to lose their final two games of the season due to their tiebreaker advantage over Tennessee by beating the Titans in week one.

Now to the 7-7 teams, Tennessee needs a victory over Buffalo which would eliminate them out of the equation and a win at home against New England on New Year's Eve to have a shot.

Pittsburgh plays host to Baltimore and then has to travel to Cincinnati, let’s assume they lose one of those games to where their out of the playoff picture. But if they win out, they would have the same conference record as the Titans at 6-6. The next tiebreaker would be common games in which each team has played. The Steelers are 2-3 in those games assuming they beat Baltimore where the Titans are 1-4. So the Titans need Pittsburgh to lose to Baltimore and beat Cincinatti assuming Cincinatti loses to Denver.

Finally, Kansas City could win out and the Titans would hold the tiebreaker advantage due to a better conference record but could do the Titans a favor by beating Jacksonville.

If more than one team is tied with the Titans at 9-7, the Jets, Bengals, Broncos and the Steelers would own tiebreakers over the Titans due to either: head-to-head victory, better conference record, or better record in common games.

The teams you want to root for in week 16 are: New England, Miami, and Baltimore.

In Week 17: San Fransisco if Cincy beats Denver, Pittsburgh if Denver beats Cincy, Kansas City if Jacksonville beats New England, and Oakland must win against the Jets.

If all this happens and the Titans win out, they will most likely travel to Baltimore as the sixth seed for week one of the playoffs.

The Titans lost to Baltimore in week ten, 27-26.
