Fisher Not Surprised By Teams Turnaround
By Justin Seamon December 18, 2006

It seems like distant memories, but 10 weeks ago the Titans were sitting at 0-5 and many fans were already talking about who the Titans were going to get in next years draft.

But after a five game winning streak and .500 record for the first time all year, many people along with the media are surprised in the Titans quick turnaround.

The only person not at all surprised by the turnaround is the Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher said in his press conference on Monday his biggest surprise this year was the way his team started.

''I was surprised at the 0-5 start,'' Head Coach Jeff Fisher said. ''I am not surprised at this. I did not think that we would get off to that type of start, the reasons are obvious.''

''I think there are reasons to be excited about this club, the direction that we are headed, and about the players themselves, and the improvement. It was a great, great feeling yesterday in that stadium with the support and the help that we got from the fans, from the noise, just the sellout and the enthusiasm there. The players deserve that, the fans deserve that, it is a two way street that is working well right now.''

Sunday's win against Jacksonville marked the fourth unconvential win in a row for the Titans. The past three games, it was the rookie quarterback Vince Young who took the game over for the Titans, but on Sunday Fisher said the defense stepped up big.

''The defense has been playing pretty well the past four or five weeks,'' Fisher said. ''We have had halfs where we haven't given up a score, we have had turnovers here and there, and [the defense] has been instrumental in the streak as well.''

''It was just good to see them yesterday just take the game over and control it from a scoring standpoint,'' Fisher said. ''It rarely happens like that, but we needed that type of effort yesterday to win.''

''The defense has been playing pretty well the past four or five weeks. We have had halfs where we haven't given up a score, we have had turnovers here and there, and [the defense] has been instrumental in the streak as well.''

With the offense only on the field for a little over 15 minutes, and being outgained offensively almost 4:1 against Jacksonville, Fisher said you get these games sometimes when you are on a roll.

''When you start coming back and you start winning, there is going to be wins like this,'' Fisher said. ''I think that is the sign of a team that is now making a move, that is working its way back, that is going to be competitive, that is going to continue to improve. You have got to find ways to win ball games.''

''It is probably unrealistic to think that we could step out there and take control of a game from start to finish and win it considering where we are with our youth and our injuries and so on and so forth. What is realistic to think is that this is a sign of good things to come, that we have found ways to win, very unique ways, week after week.''

It has not been an easy road for the Titans to get to .500. The Titans have made it to 7-7 by playing the toughest schedule up to this point in the season. Titans opponents going into Sunday's game had a winning percentage of 56 percent.

The task does not get any easier for the Titans the rest of the season. This Sunday the Titans will travel to Orchard Park, NY to take on the Buffalo Bills who have had a similar turnaround. After starting out the 2006 season 2-5, the Bills have now won five games out of their last seven.

''We have a great challenge ahead of us,'' Fisher said. ''A team with great speed, an excellent running back, and a quarterback that is running around and making plays. We have got to get the defense back and get their feet under them again, and just continue to stress improvement from an offensive standpoint''

Many fans are excited to think that the Titans might have an outside shot at getting in the playoffs if the Titans can win their next two games, but Fisher said that is not part of his thinking right now.

''We need to see what we can do to pull it back together to go up and beat Buffalo,'' Fisher said. ''That is really all we are concerned about right now.''

''We are just excited to still be in it right now with two left. The only chance to still be in it at the end is we have got to find a way to win this game.''

The Titans will look to make it six in a row when they take on the Buffalo Bills this Sunday at Orchard Park. Gametime is set for 12:00 cst.
