The Tennessee Titans stepped up once again Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars to gain another win, 24-17.
"This is another win for us, a consecutive win for us," Head Coach Jeff Fisher said. "They just keep bouncing back off of different types of wins. Last week was a very exciting finish, an overtime finish and here we go, we get into a game that most people didn't give us a chance to win and we took advantage of some turnovers and won it."
The Titans took an early lead with an 83 yard touchdown made by CB Pacman Jones.
Jacksonville QB David Garrard threw a short pass intended for WR Reggie Williams. Jones intercepted the pass on the TN-17 and rushed 83 yards scoring the first touchdown of the game. After Jones' celebration of the score, a 15 yard penalty was called on the Titans for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew scored the first points for Jaguars on a 12 yard rushing TD with 3:08 left in the first quarter.
The first quarter also held two injuries. Titans LB Peter Sirmon was injured around four minutes into the game. After being determined to have a MCL sprain, Sirmon is listed as questionable.
Jaguars RB Fred Taylor took himself out of the game after pulling a hamstring during a 35-yard drive. After first being listed as questionable, it was determined after Taylor returned to the locker room that he would not return.
With 11:26 left in the half, the Jaguars took their first lead of the game. K Josh Scobee brought in three more points on a 43-yard field goal.
The final three minutes of the half took an extended period of time as two plays were both reviewed and reversed. Titans K Rob Bironas attempted a 44-yard field goal to tie up the game but went a little far to the right. The kick was deemed no good.
In the beginning of the second half, Bironas brought the game to a tie with a 27-yard field goal.
Later in the third quarter, Garrard scrambled up the middle to be hit from behind by Titans LB David Thornton. Garrard fumbled the ball which was recovered by Titans CB Cortland Finnegan. Finnegan rushed 92 yards to score a touchdown and put Tennessee back into the lead, 17-10.
"I was just determined," Finnegan said of his touchdown. "You know, whenever you get your first pick or even fumble, you want to take it to the house. That's one of the things I tried to do and luckily I got sprung and I was in the endzone."
With 1:23 left in the third quarter, the Titans intercepted yet another pass from Garrard. Intended for Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis, Titans safety Chris Hope intercepted the pass and made a 61-yard rushing touchdown.
With the Titans holding possession of the ball for less than two minutes in the entire third quarter, the Tennesse defense was on fire as they scored 17 points.
"They have one of the stronger, more powerful, more effective offensive units in the league right now," Fisher said. "To have to play that number of plays against them consecutively; I just got to take the hat off to our defensive guys because that was a valiant effort to be on the field that long. You have got to give the defense credit for this win."
With 8:37 left in the game, Lewis was initially believed to have scored a one yard TD for Jacksonville. After further review of the play, the call was reversed when it was declared that Lewis did not have complete control of the football.
The Jaguars scored their long sought TD with a little over two and a half minutes to go in the game. Garrard passed short left to WR Matt Jones for a three yard TD bringing the score to 24-17.
Garrard gave up one final interception with 0:49 left in the game. Titans CB Reynaldo Hill intercepted the ball and gained nine yards before sliding to a stop. Young took a knee to end the game Titans 24, Jaguars 17.
By the end of the game, the Jaguars had 396 net yards and 82 plays, the Titans 98 net yards and 34 plays. Jacksonville held possession of the ball for 44:22 min and Tennessee for 15:38 min. Titans QB Vince Young was sacked three times for a loss of 28-yards while Garrard was sacked five times for a loss of 39-yards.
The Titans will travel to New York to face off against Buffalo Sunday at 12 pm CST.
