Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said that the running game for Jacksonville and Tennessee will be an important determinant in the outcome of the divisional game on Sunday.
They’re very impressive,'' Fisher said about the Jaguars ability to run the ball. ''They’re probably second to San Diego the best running team in the league with a great one-two punch at running back.''
The Jaguars are coming off a victory over the division leading Indianapolis Colts where they rushed for 375-yards as a team. Statistically the Jaguars have the second best rushing offense in the league, averaging 160.8-yards per game and 32.9 attempts per game. Fisher said the running back combination of veteran Fred Taylor and rookie Maurice Jones-Drew has formed the dangerous rushing attack for the Jaguars.
''Maurice Jones Drew is averaging 6.1 yards per carry, and you just don’t see that from a guy that’s got over 100 carries,'' Fisher said. ''He’s the real deal there, Fred’s at 5 (yards per carry). They run the same things, exact same scheme, exact same plays. They’ll hit the hole and they are really quick through the hole or they are liable to break it out any place. They are playing very well up front.''
In their first match-up, the Jaguars rushed for 173-yards on the Titans defense. Fisher said that the Jaguars also have a proficient passing game to complement their stellar rushing offense.
''They have got the weapons outside to be concerned about the receivers,'' Fisher said. ''Maurice is especially dangerous as a receiver. He’s averaging 10-yards a catch and I think he’s got over 300-receiving yards in addition to his return yards. He’s really been a upgrade for them. He’s a really fine player. So it’s a double edge sword, they are playing very well.''
For the Titans, Fisher said that they will use their fourth-ranked rushing offense to control the game and attempt to limit turnovers for Tennessee.
''We have to carry balance into the game,'' Fisher said. ''We are going to have to run it. It’s going to be a field position and time of possession game. Last time we had difficulty hanging on to the football and maintaining possession of it. We just can’t afford turnovers.''
In the first match-up, Titans quarterback Vince Young threw a career high three interceptions, including one that Jaguars cornerback Scott Starks returned for a touchdown.
Fisher said that the Titans are a better team at this point in the season than in the previous matchup. The Titans head into Sunday’s game with a four-game winning streak along with a 2-0 in rematches with their division opponents.
''I think we are an improved team,'' Fisher said. ''From a confidence standpoint, we’ve won some games. We’ve won some close games. We’ve got them at home. And we have a great deal of respect for them. They are one of the harder teams in the league.''
