Vince Young helped lead the Titans to victory on Sunday, and once again this week’s finish was no less dramatic than the last.
Young improved his record as a rookie to 6-4 since his first start in Week 4 against Dallas, and two of those four losses came by a single point.
Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said even though he’s still just a rookie, Young is taking the steps toward becoming a lethal threat with the game on the line because of his focus and lack of distraction.
Young’s return to his home state was filled with hype throughout the city of Houston week’s in advance, but Fisher said Young handled the hype like a true professional.
“We talked about that during the week,” Fisher said. “He’s mature and he understands that if you get caught up in those things during the week they’re going to take away from what you’re trying to accomplish. Just win the game and have as much fun as you want after. He was very focused during the ballgame, eagerly awaiting each call that was coming in from the sideline. Any communication we had during timeouts and such, he knew exactly what we wanted to do. He was in complete control.”
The past three games the Titans have played have been dramatic finishes for the young team, which included a 24-point fourth quarter that erases a 21-0 deficit to the New York Giants, a 60-yard field goal to defeat, at the time, a 10-1 Indianapolis Colts squad, and a 39-yard touchdown to knock off Houston in overtime.
Fisher said Young’s demeanor in the pocket and presence under center has allowed him to come through with the games on the line.
“He did a nice job checking,” Fisher said. “He did a nice job doing some things on the line of scrimmage against a good defense. This defense as we said last week in the last six or seven weeks was fifth or sixth. They’re a very talented defense. We overcame a couple of turnovers. The first time this year we’re on the minus side and win the ballgame. It was a big step for us.”
Fisher said despite Young’s great play under pressure, he’s not worried that the players will become overconfident that Young can dig the team out of a hole if they get into one.
“No I don’t because everybody contributed [on Sunday],” Fisher said. “Drew’s (Bennett) catches, bouncing back off the drop and having 100 yards (receiving). Travis’ (Henry) effort throughout the game. Chris (Brown) in relief of Travis. There were a lot of different people that contributed. There were some big plays on defense that go unnoticed – good open field tackles, Pac’s tackle on Andre Johnson on that last third down play. When I saw him catch the shallow cross, there’s no way he doesn’t pick up the first down. Pac stays high and bats him right out of bounds. We held them to a field goal there, so that was a huge play for us. There were players throughout the roster that made plays.”
“They have confidence in Vince, but at the same time Vince has confidence in the other guys that they’ll make the plays.”
