Mike Keith: VY Doing All The Right Things
View From The Voice December 11, 2006

A 24-point fourth quarter that erases a 21-0 deficit.

A 60-yard field goal to beat a 10-1 team that has knocked you off seven straight times.

A 39-yard touchdown run on 3rd and 14 to win a game in overtime.

It has been an amazing three weeks in the lives of the Tennessee Titans, their fans and those of us who follow them around.

Awed? You betcha. One of these feats would be the standout feature for a season. But three in three weeks?

Remarkable.

Last night, I watched Vince Young's touchdown run at Houston five times. The first three times, all that I saw was the Houston native's moves, his speed and his determination to put a Michael Jordan-like exclamation point on his return home. It was truly something to behold, from all angles. That play was pure VY: you saw everything that makes him special as an athlete in that run. But what I liked best about it was how Young handled it AFTERWARDS.

Yes, he celebrated with his teammates, family and fans---just the way that he should have. Young was ebullient without overdoing it. He was demonstrative while taunting no one.

How he acted on the field was just...for lack of a better term...appropriate.

How he acted in the interview room was even better.

Young could have said a lot of things about the Texans not taking him or even asked them how they liked that last run, but he didn't. There was no "in your face".

I could list 50 athletes right now who would have given plenty of "in your face", but not Vince Young. Sure, he would have like to have been taken first overall by his hometown team----the guy is a competitor, after all. Yes, he was excited about the touchdown run and excited about the win.

Yet, he took no shot at anyone.

It is simple class. Vince Young has it. How he acts and what he says...class.

He isn't perfect. Every throw is not right on the money. He has been known to run late. He can get frustrated if you don't run your pass pattern properly.

But that does not take away from the fact that when given the option, Vince Young tries to do things the right way. He is a stand-up human being.

I wrote during training camp that I saw VY do things off-the-field in Clarksville---when no one was watching---that told me more about him as a person than it did about him as a player. I also think that those personal qualities are what will define him as a player---more than his arm or his legs.

The Titans play for Vince Young because they respect his incredible athletic ability and his Steve McNair-like heart. But more than that, Young's teammates genuinely like and enjoy him.

I saw that as I watched the 39 yard touchdown run for a fourth and fifth time.

I saw tired offensive linemen give everything that they had to stone the Houston blitz, giving VY a lane to take off down the field.

I saw receiver Bobby Wade lock up a Texans' safety, enabling Young to keep going.

I saw receiver Courtney Roby lay out two Texans' defenders with what appeared to be an old-fashioned, cross-body block.

I saw players giving just as much effort on the play as Vince Young did.

That's the part of Young's game that could never be determined at the NFL combine. There is no test to define how you rally the troops. A lot of top players can't do it.

Young can.

Young does.

And you can see it every week right now in the Titans.
