Bennett Redeems Himself After Drop
By Justin Seamon December 10, 2006

Veteran wide receiver Drew Bennett redeemed himself after a first quarter dropped ball, to help lead the Titans to a 26-20 overtime win.

''I was really happy to come down here and get this win, especially for Vince, being from his hometown and everything, Bennett said.''

''It’s been good to me down here, it’s been good to the team which is more important, with the exception of a few plays I was pretty happy of my performance.''

After receiving the ball to start off the game, quarterback Vince Young went for the home run ball on a second down and nine to Bennett.

Bennett beat the Texans cornerback, and found himself wide open around the Texans 20 yard line. Bennett looked like he would make a big catch to set the Titans up for their first score, but instead dropped the pass as the ball slipped through his fingers.

Bennett, playing in the final year of his contract, responded like a true veteran receiver after that drop, and caught six passes for 113 yards. Bennett now has nine 100 yard games for his career; three of those games have come this year.

''We were after him when he dropped that, but he’s a competitor and that was fun to see him recover, Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow said.''

Five out of Bennett's six catches after the first quarter drop went for over 10 yards, with his longest catch on the day going for 39 yards. Bennett averaged 18.8 yards per catch on his six catches.

Bennett's season long 39-yard reception late in the third quarter was the key play on a five play 63 yard drive that brought the Titans to within one point of the Texans at 13-14. The 39-yard catch was also the longest pass thrown by rookie quarterback Vince Young. Bennett said Young has been one of the major keys to the Titans success.

''The guy, you can watch him grow before our very eyes, Bennett said. ''Things he has done this year in the last few weeks is something that usually takes years to kind-of learn. How to orchestrate a last minute drive and how to keep your poise and everything, he is doing a great job.''

For the season, Bennett leads the team in receptions with 36 catches and yards with 549 receiving yards. Bennett has three touchdowns this year.

In his six year NFL career with the Titans, Bennett 263 catches for 3845 yards with a career 14.6 yards per reception average.

With his performance on Sunday agaisnt the Texans, Drew Bennett moved into eighth place on the all-time Titans receiving yards list, passing Curtis Duncan.
