Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said that Texans return game will be very different in their second meeting of the season with kick returner Jerome Mathis back in the Texans lineup.
''(Mathis) was a pro bowler last year,'' Fisher said. ''He’ll follow his blockers well; sometimes he’ll counter and come out the back side. There no telling where he’s going to come out. He’s an exceptional returner.''
Mathis returned to the Houston lineup last week after missing the first 11 games of the season with a fractured foot. His presence provided a spark for the Texans in the second half when he returned a kickoff 87-yards in the second half of their win over Oakland.
''He had a great return last week,'' Fisher said. ''He’s a guy that can at any time go the distance.''
Houston and Tennessee are respectively third (12.2 ) and fourth (11.9) in the NFL in punt return yards. Houston ranks 11th (23.0) in the NFL in kickoff returns, while Tennessee is 20th (22.0) in the league in kickoffs
Fisher said that teams have been recently changing their approach to when it comes to kicking to the Titans.
''(Teams) have options in the punt game,'' Fisher said. ''Punt the out of bounds or punt the ball high. We’re seeing more week in and week out.''
The main reason for this is the play of cornerback Pacman Jones, who is third in the NFL in yards per punt return, averaging 12.2-yards. Jones is second in the NFL with two punt returns for touchdowns behind Chicago cornerback Devin Hester, who has three touchdowns.
