Texans Offense Looks To Recover
By Evan Dennison December 7, 2006

Although the Texans passed for -5 net passing yards in last week’s 23-14 victory over Oakland, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said he believes Texans quarterback David Carr can recover.

“He’s been one that’s been able to bounce back off of difficult games,” Fisher said. “He had a difficult game, and then he set what amounts to being a completion record with 22 straight after that.”

In the game before Carr completed 22 straight, he went 16-of-32 for 167 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Last week, Carr went 7-of-14 for 32 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and was sacked five times.

In the first meeting with the Titans, Carr was benched midway through the third quarter by backup Sage Rosenfels because Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Carr did not protect the football. Before being benched, Carr went 15-of-21 for 113 passing yards with an interception and two fumbles.

“For all intents and purposes I’m sure David’s got things behind him, he’s excited and looking forward to this game,” Fisher said. “He was actually removed from our game. I know that hasn’t set well with him, and he’s determined to come back and play well against us.”

Fisher said although they may be struggling producing numbers with the passing game, they still have a tough rushing attack.

“We have to be concerned with their run game. Ron Dayne had nearly 100 yards last week against the Raiders,” Fisher said.

Dayne had 18 carries for 95 yards as the Texans had 129 rushing yards in the victory.

The Texans seem to be using a two man rushing attack with Dayne and rookie Wali Lundy, when both are healthy. On the year, Lundy has 115 carries for 448 yards and four touchdowns while Dayne has 80 carries for 278 yards.

“We would assume that we’ll see them both,” Fisher said. “They’re going to use the big back in the middle of the field as a strong inside runner and just push the pile and keep drives alive. That takes pressure off the offense and also gives them a chance to use play-action pass.”

Lundy had a good outing in the first matchup as he ran 18 times for 116 yards and caught five passes for 33 yards. The 116 yards rushing by Lundy is his highest total in his young NFL career.

As the Titans prepare for the Texans this Sunday down in Houston, Fisher said the Texans will be ready for this one as Reliant Stadium has been unfamiliar to the team the past six weeks.

“It’s a difficult team to prepare for. It’s an emotional team. It’s a team that’s coming back home after five of six on the road, and they’re going to be ready for this,” Fisher said.
