Titans Draft Work Called Solid
Draft analysts across the league generally liked the Titans' three days of work calling it a solid draft. The Derrick Morgan selection at #16 gained the most acclaim. Few believed there would be a chance for the Titans to get the Georgia Tech defensive end.
Bruce Matthews' Son, An Undrafted Signee
The Titans Draft Room got busy late Saturday afternoon adding several undrafted free agents including USC's Stafon Johnson and Kevin Matthews, the son of Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews. Players that go undrafted are free to sign with any team in the hours after the draft. The Titans also added a fullback and running back.
Myron Rolle Added With 6th Round Pick
The Titans selected one of the most talked about latter-round prospects in this year's draft with the final pick of the sixth round: safety Myron Rolle. The Florida State product gave up his senior season after winning the Rhodes Scholarship. He kept in shape while studying at Oxford and returned to draft preparation without losing any momentum.
WR Mariani Goes To Titans In Seventh
The Titans may have landed another potential option at punt/kick returner, selecting Montana Wide Receiver Marc Mariani in the seventh round. The 6-0, 183 pounder ranked fourth in the FCS last season with a 16.22 punt return average. He caught 81 passes as a senior for 1,308 yards, the second most in a single season at Montana.
Titans Final Pick: DT David Howard
The Titans gained a Rhodes Scholar and a Ivy Leaguer Saturday, the latter coming in the form of defensive tackle David Howard from Brown. The 6-2, 290 pound Brown became the first Ivy League defensive lineman to be drafted since 1998.
Defense Improved Over Three Days
Months of preparation led to three days of work that improved the Titans defense, according to Head Coach Jeff Fisher and General Manager Mike Reinfeldt. Of the team's nine draft picks, the team spent six on defense and three on offense/special teams. Reinfeldt said he will continue to improve the team in the coming weeks, particularly with depth along the offensive line.
USC RB Johnson First Undrafted Signed
USC running back Stafon Johnson has signed as an undrafted priority free agent with the Titans. Johnson's 2009 season ended when he suffered life-threatening injuries after dropping a barbell on his throat while lifting weights. He is now healthy enough to play.
What They're Saying: CB Alterraun Verner, DB Robert Johnson, QB Rusty Smith
After trading Lendale White and Kevin Vickerson to Seattle, allowing the Titans to move up the draft board in both the 4th and 6th rounds respectively, the Titans selected UCLA Cornerback, Alterraun Verner, with their 4th round pick, and Florida Atlantic QB, Rusty Smith with their 6th round selection. The Titans also grabbed Defensive Back, Robert Johnson, from Utah in the 5th round. Here's what the experts say about the three players.
Titans Go QB Rusty Smith In 6th
Looking for a developmental quarterback in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Titans hit on the player the coaching staff liked: Florida Atlantic's Rusty Smith. In 44 games, Smith threw 76 touchdowns to 36 interceptions. The Jacksonville native tallied more than 10,000 passing yards.
Safety Robert Johnson Titans Pick In 5th
The Titans added a good coverage safety in Saturday's fifth round taking Utah's Robert Johnson. Johnson recorded 13 interceptions in his three seasons at Utah. Draft Analyst Mike Detillier calls him a "real ballhawk in the secondary." Lack of strength and speed moved him down to the 15th best free safety available, according to Detillier.
4th Round Pick Goes To Corner Verner
The Titans indentified a cornerback they wanted early Saturday and moved to get him, trading with Seattle to select Alterraun Verner from UCLA. The 5-10, 190 pound Verner won All PAC-10 honors as a senior, finishing with 72 tackles and five interceptions. Verner made an immediate impact as a freshman at UCLA.
Verner Told He'll Have Chance To Start
The Titans have told Alterraun Verner that he'll have an opportunity to do much more than just play on special teams. The UCLA cornerback said he expected to compete for the starting job opposite Cortland Finnegan and could also play within the nickel defense.
White, Vickerson Traded To Seattle
The Titans traded running back Lendale White and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson to Seattle Saturday morning in an effort to move up in both the fourth and sixth rounds. The move reunites White with his college coach, USC's Pete Carroll. The trade netted the Titans seven slots up the draft board in both rounds.
Mike Detillier's Best Available Day 3
As the 2010 NFL Draft moves into its third day Saturday, several projected first round draft picks remain on the board. Here are the top ten players available as the fourth round begins Saturday morning. Rounds four through seven take place Saturday.
Titans Take WR Williams At Pick 77
The Titans addressed the need for a punt and kick returner and got a bonus, a potential starting receiver, in Friday's third round, selecting USC Wide Receiver Damian Williams. Williams, known as a very good route runner with good hands, started his college career at Arkansas before transferring to USC. Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt said the team would have taken Williams even had he not been a returner option.
Titans Choose DE Derrick Morgan At Pick #16
The Titans selected Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan with the 16th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Considered to be the most-ready defensive end for the NFL level, an athletic player who is equally strong at stopping the run and rushing the passer. Morgan, 21, was a first-team All-American and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Georgia LB Curran Wraps Up Day 2
The Titans wrapped up day two of the NFL Draft by returning to the defensive side of the football and selecting linebacker Rennie Curran out of the University of Georgia. The outside linebacker took home All-SEC First Team honors and finished as a finalist for both the Lombardi and Bednarik Awards. Starting 30 games at Georgia, Curran registered 173 tackles and 6.5 sacks.
Two More Needs Answered Friday
Answering needs at returner and linebacker Friday, the Titans got good work done even without a second round pick. Most analysts believed Friday would be a free-wheeling opportunity for teams to trade hoping to get better quality of players in round two. It did not happen. Tennessee selected wide receiver Damian Williams and linebacker Rennie Curran in round three.
Damian Williams' College Stats
The Titans added a receiver and returner in Friday night's third round, selecting USC's Damian Williams with the 77th overall selection. Williams registered 2,114 receiving yards, 147 receptions, 13.9 reception yards average, 17 touchdowns, and 0 fumbles in his three seasons at Arkansas and Southern California.
What They're Saying: WR Damian Williams
The Titans selected Wide Receiver Damian Williams in Friday night's third round. The USC product, who began his college career at Arkansas, has been consistently credited with his natural receiving ability and soft hands. Here are what the experts say about Williams.
Rennie Curran's College Stats
At Georgia, new Titans linebacker Rennie Curran registered 298 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 4 passes broken up, and 34 quarterback hits. He led the team in tackles in each of the last two seasons, just the 10 Bulldog to accomplish that feat in consecutive years.
Titans Will Be Busy On Day Three
The Music City Marathon will take over the streets of Nashville Saturday morning, running by Baptist Sports Park, the Titans practice facility. A marathon Saturday will already be underway there as the Titans prepare to make six selections on the final day of the 2010 NFL Draft. The Titans' first pick comes at 111 in round four.
Cecil Extremely Thankful Morgan Fell
Probably no one inside Baptist Sports Park was happier with the Titans first round selection of defensive end Derrick Morgan than Chuck Cecil. The Titans Defensive Coordinator needed a young pass rusher to help the defensive front that produced 12 fewer sacks in 2009 than the season prior when the team finished 13-3.
What They're Saying: Derrick Morgan
The Titans went with the need most discussed need in the first round Thursday night, selecting a defensive end. Titans Radio takes a look at what the top NFL Draft analysts have said about first round pick Derrick Morgan, the first overall ranked defensive ends among most analysts.
Tired Morgan Ready To Motor At DE
Former Georgia Tech Defensive End Derrick Morgan celebrated his 16th overall pick in Thursday's NFL Draft on the town in New York City with his fellow draft picks. Arriving early in Nashville Friday, Morgan admitted being sleepy, but said he wanted to get to work in the Titans playbook. Tennessee selected the ACC Defensive Player of the Year Thursday.
Titans Will Attempt To Move Into Round 2
Just as many of the average Titans fans across the midsouth will do, the Titans draft room will be watching and listening to early coverage of Day 2 of the NFL Draft rather than immediately sizing up the draft board. Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and his staff will have plenty of time to ponder the team's next pick once the NFL Draft resumes in prime time Friday evening. After selecting Derrick Morgan with the 16th overall selection, the Titans don't currently pick again until the third round at #77 overall, 44 picks after the second round begins.
Fisher Didn't Expect Morgan To Fall
Like many in the team’s draft room on Thursday night, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher didn’t think Derrick Morgan would still be available by the time the Titans went on the clock with the 16th selection in the first round. Fortunately enough for the staff, defensive ends Brandon Graham and Jason Pierre-Paul came off the board prior to Morgan which allowed the 6-3, 268-pound ACC Defensive Player of the Year to slip to Nashville.
Morgan Familiar With Washburn's Coaching
Titans first round pick Derrick Morgan is familiar with his new defensive line coach Jim Washburn. Morgan was recruited out of college by one of Washburn’s best friends and through that had gotten to know the Titans defensive line coach prior to Thursday’s draft selection.
Derrick Morgan's College Stats
Morgan registered 112 tackles, 18 sacks, 2 forced fumbles in his three seasons at Georgia Tech. The 6-4, 270-pound defensive lineman led the ACC with 12.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss as a junior last season. After not playing much as a freshman, Morgan improved in each of his three seasons at Tech, posting seven sacks and 56 tackles as a sophomore.
Pierre-Paul The Analysts Pick For Titans
Titans Radio Draft Analyst Mike Detillier of the M&D Draft Report has the Titans selecting defensive end Derrick Morgan of Georgia Tech in his most recent mock draft. The majority of the final mock drafts hitting the web 24 hours prior to the first pick have the Titans slated to select defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul from South Florida.
Titans Will Consider Trading Down
Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said the team would consider trading down in the first round depending on which players the team has graded high on their draft board are still available when they go on the clock at pick #16. The goal of trading down would be to re-gain a second round selection, a pick the Titans traded a year ago to New England in order to move up and select tight end Jared Cook.
Reinfeldt Expects #16 To Be Instant Contributor
Regardless of the position the Titans choose to take with the 16th pick in Thursday night's first round of the NFL Draft, General Manager Mike Reinfeldt said the player chosen would need to be an instant contributor to the roster come September.
Alabama's Jackson Not Looking Back
Alabama Cornerback Kareem Jackson ranks as the fifth best cornerback available in the 2010 NFL Draft. Had he stayed at Alabama for his senior season, Jackson could have been the top cornerback off the board in 2011. Jackson said he has no regrets.
Lots Of Defensive End Options
When the Titans go to work Thursday in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, defensive end will be the top priority. The team has visited with numerous first round candidates during the last several months. The two players who started the 2009 season as starters at defensive end are no longer on the roster.
First Round Looks Deep
The 2010 NFL Draft begins tonight with the first round at 6:30pm central. It is a deep first round of talent with first round grades on between 30-50 players. Rounds two and three take place Friday while the final four rounds come Saturday.
Trades Could Rise With Three Day Format
The Titans and the other 31 NFL teams will be adjusting to a new draft format when the 2010 NFL Draft opens Thursday. For the first time, the draft will begin in prime time, with the first round Thursday night. Then, after an almost 20-hour break, the second and third rounds will take place Friday. The final four rounds will happen Saturday.
Expect A Defensive Draft For Titans
As the Titans prepare for Thursday's first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, defense appears to be the team's top priority. Six of the last ten first round picks have been used on defense, but the Titans have increased their skill player production selecting Chris Johnson and Kenny Britt in each of the last two seasons.
Size No Issue For McCluster
Most draft analysts predict the versatile Dexter McCluster will come off the draft board on Friday as a second or third round pick. A running back who became a versatile receiver, McCluster finished behind only Deuce McCallister in all-purpose yards. Some detractors believe height will be a problem for the Florida native at the NFL level.
Gilyard, Hardesty Among Visitors This Week
The Titans will welcome more potential draftees to Baptist Sports Park as the final three weeks of the draft preparation begin. Among the players expected to visit this week are Central Michigan Wide Receiver/Returner Antonio Brown, Cincinnati Wide Receiver Mardy Gilyard, Tennessee Running Back Montario Hardesty, and Texas Safety Earl Thomas.
Nine Picks Make Up Titans Class
Barring any trades in the final weeks before the draft, the Titans will have nine selections to work with during the 75th NFL Draft. The Titans pick first at number 16. After trading away the second round pick last year, the Titans will work with six picks and three compensatory selections.
Titans Get 3rd Round Pick, 3 Compensatories
The NFL Management Council awarded the Titans a third round compensatory selection for the loss of Albert Haynesworth in last year's free agency period. All told, the Titans received three compensatory selections in April's NFL Draft. 19 teams won a total of 32 compensatory selections, which are awarded to teams who lost more in free agency than gained.
Titans Begin Scheduling Draft Meetings
As Pro Days continue, the Titans front office will soon get off the road, bringing prospects to Nashville. Teams can host a limited number of potential draftees. The individual sessions offer teams a chance to explore medical issues or get to know players they have questions about. Some teams use the meetings to get other teams "off the scent" with players they might have interest in.
Morgan, Pierre-Paul Remain Top Mock Picks
The seasons may be changing, but what the experts predict from the Titans in April's first round has not. The first mock drafts of March all predict the Titans will select a defensive end with the 16th selection. Most of the attention centers on Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan and South Florida's Jason Pierre-Paul.
Pro Days Arrive In Volunteer State
NFL Pro Days arrive in the Volunteer State Wednesday as workouts take place at Carson Newman, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, and Vanderbilt this week. Eric Berry and Dan Williams will get the most attention as both Volunteers project as top 20 selections in April.
Morgan Considered True 4-3 Defensive End
By most analysts' accounts, Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan fits among the top three defensive ends available this April. Many consider him the best true 4-3 pass rusher. The ACC's Defensive Player of the Year led the Yellow Jackets recorded 55 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks.
Myron Rolle Returns To Football With Mentor Samari Behind Him
Florida State Safety Myron Rolle said former Titans Cornerback Samari Rolle has helped him prepare for the rigors of the NFL Combine underway in Indianapolis. The two are distant cousins, if related at all, but have a long history together. The younger Rolle followed Samari to Florida State and now hopes for a long NFL career.
Pierre-Paul Runs Unofficial 4.64
Two of the top defensive ends on the 2010 NFL Draft Board ran the 40-yard dash Monday. South Florida's Jason Pierre-Paul ran a 4.64 while Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan posted a 4.72 40 time. Official times will not be posted until all workouts are complete.
Titans Talk To Returner Rogan
The Titans used one of their 15-minute interviews Saturday night to visit with defensive back/returner Dennis Rogan. The University of Tennessee product turned pro following Lane Kiffin's resignation in January. Rogan said he felt comfortable at all the positions in the secondary, which he played at one point during his career in Knoxville.
Tide's McClain Ready To Be Impact Linebacker
Alabama's Rolando McClain ranks as the top inside linebacker available in this year's NFL Draft. A junior who declared after Alabama's BCS win over Texas, McClain said he accomplished everything he wanted to as a 3-4 linebacker at Alabama. He credited Nick Saban for preparing him with an NFL-style defense.
Lot Of Opinions On Pass Rushers, Titans Need
With free agency still days away, the Titans clear need entering the 2010 NFL Draft would be defensive end. As the pass rushers begin their workouts, few agree on how to rank the top five. However, there is agreement on the quality of the group top to bottom.
McCoy Appreciates Young's Support
Texas Quarterback Colt McCoy may not be the third overall pick like the man he replaced in Austin. Still, McCoy said he counts on his friend Vince Young for advice as the NFL Draft approaches. Young and McCoy talked at length as McCoy prepared for the BCS National Championship game. But a nerve injury ended McCoy's action after five plays.
UT's Williams Ready For 3-4 Or 4-3
University of Tennessee Defensive Tackle Dan Williams said he can help a team playing either a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. Regarded as a top five defensive tackle as draft preparations begin, Williams has spent the past two days watching film explaining to teams what he would do in particular situations. Williams said he expects to be a first round selection.
Questions Surround '10 Quarterbacks
Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen stand in Indianapolis as the top two quarterbacks to this point of draft analysis. Both have questions, starting with their decisions not to work this weekend. Bradford continues to recover from shoulder surgery, Clausen, surgery on his toe.
Hoping To Regain Draft Status, Snead Will Throw
Ole Miss Quarterback Jevan Snead will throw at the NFL Combine this weekend, hoping to show scouts his upside. Snead led the Rebels to back-to-back nine wins seasons, but last year's 9-4 season disappointed most considering the expectations going into August. Snead decided to giveup his senior season and turn pro early.
Casserly Calls First Round Picks Best Since 83
CBS Sports And NFL Network Analyst Charlie Casserly said the 2010 NFL Draft's first round talent looks to be the best since 1983. Casserly said an outstanding junior class along with players who benefitted from not coming out last year combined to improve the overall class.
Titans Win Toss, Pick 16th
An early morning set of coin flips at the NFL Combine produced the final order for the 2010 NFL Draft. The Titans will pick 16th. Tennessee won the flip with the Panthers and 49ers, a draft pick acquired by San Francisco in a 2009 trade.
Draft Contains Defensive Value
The Titans will likely use a lot of their picks in April's NFL Draft to rebuild a veteran defense. NFL Network Draft Analyst Mike Mayock said this year's draft appears to be the deepest defensively he has seen in eight years. Mayock ranked Sam Bradford as the only franchise quarterback available this year.
Vandy's Welch Looking To Make Move
Vanderbilt Product Thomas Welch projects among the 25-best offensive tackles as the NFL Combine begins in Indianapolis. Now the Economics major who graduated in December wants to improve his draft position with his work this weekend. Welch played both left and right tackle in two seasons as a starter.
Defense Rules Titans' First Mock Draft Drafts
The first round of mock drafts surrounding the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game produced defensive line prospects for the Titans. South Florida Defensive End Jason Pierre-Paul received the most mentions in these mock drafts. Every mock draft predicted the Titans would go defensive line with their first selection.

(1) Defensive End (2) Linebacker (3) Cornerback
(4) Return Specialist (4) Tight End (5) Guard/Center
